All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty. &#8220;Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. 3Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 4&#8220;Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.&#8221;</div>

Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 2But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner&#8217;s fire or a launderer&#8217;s soap. 3He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="s1">Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How are we to return?&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.</div><div class="p">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How are we robbing you?&#8217;</div><div class="p">&#8220;In tithes and offerings. 9You are under a curse&#8212;your whole nation&#8212;because you are robbing me. 10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, &#8220;and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty. 12&#8220;Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="s1">Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;You have spoken arrogantly against me,&#8221; says the Lord.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yet you ask, &#8216;What have we said against you?&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;You have said, &#8216;It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? 15But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Faithful Remnant</div><div class="p"> 16Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;On the day when I act,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, &#8220;they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. 18And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.</div>

 <div class="label">36</div><div class="s1">Hope for the Mountains of Israel</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, &#8216;Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. 2This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The enemy said of you, &#8220;Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession.&#8221;&#8198;&#8217; 3Therefore prophesy and say, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people&#8217;s malicious talk and slander, 4therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and the deserted towns that have been plundered and ridiculed by the rest of the nations around you&#8212; 5this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.&#8217; 6Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations. 7Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. 9I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown, 10and I will cause many people to live on you&#8212;yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. 11I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance; you will never again deprive them of their children.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, &#8220;You devour people and deprive your nation of its children,&#8221; 14therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Israel&#8217;s Restoration Assured</div><div class="p"> 16Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17&#8220;Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman&#8217;s monthly uncleanness in my sight. 18So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions. 20And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, &#8216;These are the Lord&#8217;s people, and yet they had to leave his land.&#8217; 21I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;Therefore say to the Israelites, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. 23I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. 30I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. 31Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. 32I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!</div><div class="p"> 33&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt. 34The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35They will say, &#8220;This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.&#8221; 36Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 37&#8220;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel&#8217;s plea and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep, 38as numerous as the flocks for offerings at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">37</div><div class="s1">The Valley of Dry Bones</div><div class="p"> 1The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3He asked me, &#8220;Son of man, can these bones live?&#8221;</div><div class="p">I said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, you alone know.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then he said to me, &#8220;Prophesy to these bones and say to them, &#8216;Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath#37:5 The Hebrew for this word can also mean wind or spirit (see verses 6-14). enter you, and you will come to life. 6I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.</div><div class="p"> 9Then he said to me, &#8220;Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; 10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet&#8212;a vast army.</div><div class="p"> 11Then he said to me: &#8220;Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, &#8216;Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.&#8217; 12Therefore prophesy and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">One Nation Under One King</div><div class="p"> 15The word of the Lord came to me: 16&#8220;Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, &#8216;Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.&#8217; Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, &#8216;Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.&#8217; 17Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;When your people ask you, &#8216;Won&#8217;t you tell us what you mean by this?&#8217; 19say to them, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph&#8212;which is in Ephraim&#8217;s hand&#8212;and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah&#8217;s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.&#8217; 20Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21and say to them, &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land. 22I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms. 23They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,#37:23 Many Hebrew manuscripts (see also Septuagint); most Hebrew manuscripts all their dwelling places where they sinned and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees. 25They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children&#8217;s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever. 26I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever. 27My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people. 28Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy, when my sanctuary is among them forever.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Judgment on Israel&#8217;s Enemies</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak</div><div class="q2">and will come to rest on Damascus&#8212;</div><div class="q1">for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel</div><div class="q2">are on the Lord&#8212;#9:1 Or Damascus. / For the eye of the Lord is on all people, / as well as on the tribes of Israel,</div><div class="q1"> 2and on Hamath too, which borders on it,</div><div class="q2">and on Tyre and Sidon, though they are very skillful.</div><div class="q1"> 3Tyre has built herself a stronghold;</div><div class="q2">she has heaped up silver like dust,</div><div class="q2">and gold like the dirt of the streets.</div><div class="q1"> 4But the Lord will take away her possessions</div><div class="q2">and destroy her power on the sea,</div><div class="q2">and she will be consumed by fire.</div><div class="q1"> 5Ashkelon will see it and fear;</div><div class="q2">Gaza will writhe in agony,</div><div class="q2">and Ekron too, for her hope will wither.</div><div class="q1">Gaza will lose her king</div><div class="q2">and Ashkelon will be deserted.</div><div class="q1"> 6A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod,</div><div class="q2">and I will put an end to the pride of the Philistines.</div><div class="q1"> 7I will take the blood from their mouths,</div><div class="q2">the forbidden food from between their teeth.</div><div class="q1">Those who are left will belong to our God</div><div class="q2">and become a clan in Judah,</div><div class="q2">and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.</div><div class="q1"> 8But I will encamp at my temple</div><div class="q2">to guard it against marauding forces.</div><div class="q1">Never again will an oppressor overrun my people,</div><div class="q2">for now I am keeping watch.</div><div class="s1">The Coming of Zion&#8217;s King</div><div class="q1"> 9Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!</div><div class="q2">Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!</div><div class="q1">See, your king comes to you,</div><div class="q2">righteous and victorious,</div><div class="q1">lowly and riding on a donkey,</div><div class="q2">on a colt, the foal of a donkey.</div><div class="q1"> 10I will take away the chariots from Ephraim</div><div class="q2">and the warhorses from Jerusalem,</div><div class="q2">and the battle bow will be broken.</div><div class="q1">He will proclaim peace to the nations.</div><div class="q2">His rule will extend from sea to sea</div><div class="q2">and from the River#9:10 That is, the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.</div><div class="q1"> 11As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,</div><div class="q2">I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.</div><div class="q1"> 12Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;</div><div class="q2">even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.</div><div class="q1"> 13I will bend Judah as I bend my bow</div><div class="q2">and fill it with Ephraim.</div><div class="q1">I will rouse your sons, Zion,</div><div class="q2">against your sons, Greece,</div><div class="q2">and make you like a warrior&#8217;s sword.</div><div class="s1">The Lord Will Appear</div><div class="q1"> 14Then the Lord will appear over them;</div><div class="q2">his arrow will flash like lightning.</div><div class="q1">The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;</div><div class="q2">he will march in the storms of the south,</div><div class="q2"> 15and the Lord Almighty will shield them.</div><div class="q1">They will destroy</div><div class="q2">and overcome with slingstones.</div><div class="q1">They will drink and roar as with wine;</div><div class="q2">they will be full like a bowl</div><div class="q2">used for sprinkling#9:15 Or bowl, / like the corners of the altar.</div><div class="q1"> 16The Lord their God will save his people on that day</div><div class="q2">as a shepherd saves his flock.</div><div class="q1">They will sparkle in his land</div><div class="q2">like jewels in a crown.</div><div class="q1"> 17How attractive and beautiful they will be!</div><div class="q2">Grain will make the young men thrive,</div><div class="q2">and new wine the young women.</div>
