Voice in the Noise
Have you ever been in a place that was so noisy you couldn’t hear yourself think? What about being in a quiet place, yet the voices in your head are so loud you simply cannot hear anything else?
God, in His mercy, chooses to speak straight to our hearts all of the time. But the ‘noise’ of the hustle and bustle around us, and even within us, distorts and drowns out our spiritual hearing receptors such that it becomes extremely difficult for us to hear God’s voice.
We do not always hear God clearly. There are a number of reasons why this happens, beyond the audible noises around us, including our hearts not being postured right, and our ears mostly clogged up with sin and the desires of the flesh.
I love that God is always speaking, always communicating with us, be that via the heavens declaring His glory, or the roar of the waters, or the songs of the birds or even the swaying trees. He longs to fellowship with us day and night and it is no small matter that He chooses to live inside of us. So, we must hear Him out, and hear Him always, keeping our spiritual antenna engaged constantly in order to foster a valuable, qualitative and intimate relationship with Him.
When you are alone with God, there are various ways in which you can still your mind, quiet the noises and hear God speak. But first you must condition your mind, free yourself of every contrary thought, and listen attentively.
When you are going through the busyness of life, you have to actively seek pockets of time to hear God’s voice by tuning and re-tuning your spiritual antenna! Yes, God can speak to you even in the midst of chaotic noises.
Here are 5 tips to help you:
1. Find the time: Take time out to be alone in the presence of God. Deliberately schedule your day and activities, blocking out people and projects as necessary.
2. Rest in Him: Be free in God’s presence. Empty yourself of the cares of life and allow Him to fill your mind.
3. Heed His voice: Get His words in your system by spending more time reading the Bible, listening for His voice in scripture, studying themes and topics, meditating on scripture and memorising it.
4. Speak to Him: You may call this prayer, but the key is to reach out to God with your words, heart, tears, even your breathing. Choose to see Him and to hear Him. Do not limit your prayer to one form. Remember that God is creative and you are created in His image.
5. Train yourself to hear Him speak: This can also be achieved via prayer and being very patient while waiting for God to speak back to your heart. Be intentional about writing down everything you hear.
Develop the habit of always having a copy of the Bible, a pen and paper as you meet with God (and even for the random moments and pockets of time you find to devote to God through the day). Technology has made this easy and there are digital devices that combine the Bible, a notepad and pen.
I pray that the noises of the world and those in your heart will not hinder you from hearing even the whispers of the voice of God.
