How to Be Free From Guilt

DAY 6 OF 7

Overcoming Guilt by Faith

When we struggle with guilt after confessing our sins to Christ, we need to take another look at our faith. First, we need to check the content of what we believe in. We need to examine our understanding of the biblical precepts of salvation, redemption, and justification. At the same time, we need to examine the substance of our faith itself. If we battle to accept Christ’s forgiveness for our confessed sins, we might not have the assurance of our salvation.

There is no escape from guilt for any of us if we do not believe the Bible. Without faith, we are going to have struggles in every area of our Christian walk. Sometimes, the battle a person has with a constantly guilty conscience is a faith battle. The Bible calls the believer blessed. Here are some questions that we need to ask ourselves to test our faith: Is the Word of God true? Am I forgiven according to the Bible? When the Scripture states that I am clothed with Christ’s righteousness, am I? Is God a good Father who loves me even when He disciplines me? Is it true that my discipline is for His glory, my good, and my holiness? Our answer to each of these questions has to be an affirmative “yes.” Once we firmly believe these truths, we can experience God’s love and forgiveness.

Often, our faith gets tested by the circumstances around us or the feelings inside of us. In other words, we do not always see what we believe immediately manifested in our lives. The answer, however, is still faith. After Christ’s death and resurrection, one of His disciples was told by others that He is alive again. This disciple named Thomas said that he would only believe that Christ was risen if he touched the wounds on Jesus’ hands. To this man, seeing was believing. Jesus visited the doubting Thomas, but rebuked him for his unbelief. Christ said that in God’s Kingdom, believing is seeing. According to the Bible, blessed are those who believe before they see.

We need to practice faith in our lives. We need to be assured of our salvation regardless of what we see or feel. We also need to be assured of our forgiveness. If your feelings of guilt make you question your salvation, question your faith. Biblical faith gives us the ability to live guilt-free.
