Kingdom Priests
1 Chronicles 6
What’s in a name? To be more specific, what could be remotely interesting about reading a list of names in the Scriptures? Well, one of the things that makes Chapter 6 meaningful are the details about the tribe of Levi. This particular tribe was set apart for God’s purpose.
There is an important reference to this tribe in this chapter. The Levitical line served throughout the time of the temple built by Solomon (v10) until the last tribes who offended God were sent off into exile (v15). A High Priest by the name of Zadok (v8) ruled when David restored the line because it had been interrupted and corrupted.
Verses 31-81 get very specific to the priest’s roles in serving God and being intercessors for others. All the cities and places laid out shows how God provided a place and means for his servants to do their service. This history shows us the significance God sets on the service and teaching of his people to help others learn to worship Him.
Jesus came to give us a new way to be in relationship with God and save us from an eternal exile, and a new form of priesthood was restored. It was no longer restricted to one tribe within the Hebrew nation. It opened to all who are adopted into God’s family by His grace. We, the followers of Christ’s way, are designated as priests to live our lives in total devotion to the supremacy of God. We are placed in our time and our communities to serve others and point others to Him.
Lord, show me through your Spirit where and how I am to be your servant.
Family Connection: God created each person in your family for a reason. Each of you have a unique purpose that will bring Him glory. Talk about the way that God is, or can be, using each of you to share His love where you are. As a family, memorize Isaiah 43:1, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
