Faith – in Other WordsSample

Faith – in Other Words

DAY 9 OF 9

Hebrews 12, in particular verses 1 through 4, isn’t always included in our thoughts/messages on faith, as it is a new chapter.  But chapter breaks were added post the scriptures being written, and they don’t always help with the continuity of themes.  In this instance that is certainly the case.  The explication of faith doesn’t stop at the last verse of Hebrews 11.  There is more to say, and it is less than a promise of invincibility.

We are persuaded by the writer, to see that those who went before us, are a large crowd cheering us on.  Some of them were delivered and some suffered, but their faith shines true and strong in either case, and is an encouragement to us, who may be enjoying victory, or who may be suffering.

The people that read this letter were suffering for their faith, in one way or another.  They faced rejection from community, the loss of possessions, and likely, physical threats and violence.

Their faith was also growing in the midst of a struggle, with weights that hinder and sin that clings.  They were to, we are to, look to Jesus who authors and perfects our faith.

The perfecting of their faith, as with their example, Jesus, was in an atmosphere of hostility.  We are encouraged to not grow weary or faint-hearted, but to endure like Jesus, who suffered considerably more than we will.

Faith, and this is not for the faint of heart, is defined by endurance – in other words

Day 8

About this Plan

Faith – in Other Words

The writer of Hebrews 11 states from the get-go, that faith is an assurance, a conviction, in and of something not seen, but hoped for. Hope in this instance is rock solid, based upon the character, and articulations of God; his person and his word, in other words.
