Adventure Together - A 5-Day Devotional Sample
Adventure Together Day 5:
As parents, one of our greatest fears is our children drifting away from us. When they’re little the fear isn’t as real, because we are still the center of their universe. But with each year, they become more independent and we think we’re losing them. This isn’t really the truth. Their becoming independent doesn’t mean they don’t need us. It just means they don’t need us to wipe their booty, pick out their clothes, or drive them to school. But they still need our presence, our friendship, our encouragement, and our love. They need to know we support them and that we believe in them. They need to know we won’t pull back from them, even if they push us away. They need to know we’ll hang on!
Adventuring together provides a space and a place for this to happen. The time together doesn’t have to be forced or awkward. When we are willing to put in the work, the connections will begin to happen naturally. . . . Know that this will take time and sacrifice and effort on our part. We can’t expect our kids to put down their phones and clear their schedules for us if we won’t do the same for them. We can’t expect connection with our kid to happen overnight if we’ve been neglecting it for years. You are on this journey together for the rest of your life, so keep moving forward together, making memories, and having adventures and trust that the heart connections are being made slowly but surely. . . .
I’m wishing that you go out and meet your kids on the hiking trail, at the art class, in the tent in the backyard, and in the pages of the book you are reading together. I pray that you will adventure with them, and that, by doing so, you’ll build connections that will last a lifetime. Moms and dads, be all there with your kids, and you’ll reap the rewards for the rest of your life. Adventure awaits!
