 <div class="label">50</div><div class="p"> 1Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. 2Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him, 3taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.</div><div class="p"> 4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh&#8217;s court, &#8220;If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5&#8216;My father made me swear an oath and said, &#8220;I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.&#8221; Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Pharaoh said, &#8220;Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh&#8217;s officials accompanied him&#8212;the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt&#8212; 8besides all the members of Joseph&#8217;s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father&#8217;s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen. 9Chariots and horsemen#50:9 Or charioteers also went up with him. It was a very large company.</div><div class="p"> 10When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father. 11When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, &#8220;The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.&#8221; That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.#50:11 Abel Mizraim means mourning of the Egyptians.</div><div class="p"> 12So Jacob&#8217;s sons did as he had commanded them: 13They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 14After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.</div><div class="s1">Joseph Reassures His Brothers</div><div class="p"> 15When Joseph&#8217;s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, &#8220;What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?&#8221; 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, &#8220;Your father left these instructions before he died: 17&#8216;This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.&#8217; Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.&#8221; When their message came to him, Joseph wept.</div><div class="p"> 18His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. &#8220;We are your slaves,&#8221; they said.</div><div class="p"> 19But Joseph said to them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21So then, don&#8217;t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.&#8221; And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.</div><div class="s1">The Death of Joseph</div><div class="p"> 22Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father&#8217;s family. He lived a hundred and ten years 23and saw the third generation of Ephraim&#8217;s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph&#8217;s knees.#50:23 That is, were counted as his</div><div class="p"> 24Then Joseph said to his brothers, &#8220;I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.&#8221; 25And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, &#8220;God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.</div>

 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">The Israelites Oppressed</div><div class="p"> 1These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; 3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; 4Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. 5The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy#1:5 Masoretic Text (see also Gen. 46:27); Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint (see also Acts 7:14 and note at Gen. 46:27) seventy-five in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.</div><div class="p"> 6Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.</div><div class="p"> 8Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt. 9&#8220;Look,&#8221; he said to his people, &#8220;the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13and worked them ruthlessly. 14They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.</div><div class="p"> 15The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16&#8220;When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.&#8221; 17The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. 18Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, &#8220;Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19The midwives answered Pharaoh, &#8220;Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.</div><div class="p"> 22Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: &#8220;Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">24</div><div class="s1">Paul&#8217;s Trial Before Felix</div><div class="p"> 1Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor. 2When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: &#8220;We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. 3Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. 4But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect 6and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him. [7]#24:6-7 Some manuscripts include here him, and we would have judged him in accordance with our law. 7 But the commander Lysias came and took him from us with much violence, 8 ordering his accusers to come before you. 8By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9The other Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.</div><div class="p"> 10When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: &#8220;I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense. 11You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. 13And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me. 14However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, 15and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. 16So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings. 18I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance. 19But there are some Jews from the province of Asia, who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me. 20Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin&#8212; 21unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: &#8216;It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. &#8220;When Lysias the commander comes,&#8221; he said, &#8220;I will decide your case.&#8221; 23He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs.</div><div class="p"> 24Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. 25As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, &#8220;That&#8217;s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.&#8221; 26At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.</div><div class="p"> 27When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison.</div>

His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 4Peter said to Jesus, &#8220;Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters&#8212;one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, &#8220;This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them. &#8220;Get up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid.&#8221; 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10The disciples asked him, &#8220;Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Jesus replied, &#8220;To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.&#8221; 13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy</div><div class="p"> 14When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15&#8220;Lord, have mercy on my son,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17 &#8220;You unbelieving and perverse generation,&#8221; Jesus replied, &#8220;how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.&#8221; 18Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.</div><div class="p"> 19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, &#8220;Why couldn&#8217;t we drive it out?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20He replied, &#8220;Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, &#8216;Move from here to there,&#8217; and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.&#8221; [21]#17:21 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Mark 9:29.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time</div><div class="p"> 22When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, &#8220;The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.&#8221; And the disciples were filled with grief.</div><div class="s1">The Temple Tax</div><div class="p"> 24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t your teacher pay the temple tax?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;Yes, he does,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p">When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. &#8220;What do you think, Simon?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes&#8212;from their own children or from others?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26&#8220;From others,&#8221; Peter answered.</div><div class="p"> &#8220;Then the children are exempt,&#8221; Jesus said to him. 27&#8220;But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.&#8221;</div>
