MEANINGLESS! MEANINGLESS?Sample

If this was true for the Teacher 3,000 years ago, how much more so for us in our “info-glut” moment? More information is available to us now than at any point in human history – but making sense of it all is no easier.
I find strangely comforting the reminder that, as overwhelmed and confused by the state of the world as I often am, those who claim to know exactly how things stand are fooling themselves.
We have a responsibility to discern what we can; to act justly and to walk humbly before God. But we must act on incomplete information, and trust that God – who alone comprehends the nature and consequences of all things – can make good our efforts at faithful obedience.
What is your response to the wealth of information available to you? Are you tempted to paralysis, or to confidence that you understand how the world works?
Prayer: Lord God, I am thankful today remembering that, though I cannot comprehend what goes on under the sun, you are the one who sees and knows all. Please take the good works I attempt in your service and bring good from them in a complex world. Amen.

About this Plan

The book of Ecclesiastes is not an easy part of the Bible – largely because it plumbs depths to our souls and experience that are not easy either. Strap in for an unflinching, possibly uncomfortable, but ultimately hopeful encounter with a very ancient and also very contemporary anguish about what it’s like to be human in God’s marvellous, broken world.
