Finding Contentment: 5-Day Devotional for Coaches

DAY 3 OF 5

Stop to Wonder

Over the last year, I have spent a good amount of time on an airplane. It’s something we take for granted, being thousands of feet in the air, traveling at hundreds of miles an hour. Only a few centuries ago, the trip from Europe to America took months, with a high chance of death. Now, when we hop on a plane, we flip out if the Wi-Fi isn’t working, there is a few-hour delay, or the guy sitting next to us is super sweaty! We fail to stop and wonder at the amazing feat that we are flying through the air at 30,000 feet traveling 500 miles per hour in relative comfort.

It’s not just in air travel that we fail to stop and wonder. Entitlement seems to be everywhere around us. Where does it come from? It comes from our lack of gratitude for what we have in our lives. The world doesn’t owe us anything. God doesn’t owe us anything. Everything is a gift.

However, we seem to forget this at every turn. When was the last time you stopped to wonder at your life? Wonder leads to gratitude, and gratitude leads to generosity and joy. As Albert Einstein said once, “There are only two ways to live your life: one is as though nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Go through today in wonder of every person and everything around you. Take in the little things, like the plumbing in your bathroom, the food in your pantry and refrigerator, and your phone’s ability to connect you to people all over the world in an instant.

Most importantly, stop to wonder at the glory of God and His mercy for you. He loves us even in our weakness.

About this Plan

Finding Contentment: 5-Day Devotional for Coaches

Coaches face many external battles, but perhaps our greatest battle is the internal one to find peace and fulfillment. All too often, we fall for the trap of measuring our self-worth by the scoreboard, but no amount of winning is ever enough. This devotional is a guide to find balance and contentment in the midst of a sporting culture that values winning above all else.
