 <div class="p">40where she entered Zechariah&#8217;s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary&#8217;s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42In a loud voice she exclaimed: &#8220;Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Mary&#8217;s Song</div><div class="p"> 46And Mary said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;My soul glorifies the Lord</div><div class="q2"> 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,</div><div class="q1"> 48for he has been mindful</div><div class="q2">of the humble state of his servant.</div><div class="q1">From now on all generations will call me blessed,</div><div class="q2"> 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me&#8212;</div><div class="q2">holy is his name.</div><div class="q1"> 50His mercy extends to those who fear him,</div><div class="q2">from generation to generation.</div><div class="q1"> 51He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;</div><div class="q2">he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.</div><div class="q1"> 52He has brought down rulers from their thrones</div><div class="q2">but has lifted up the humble.</div><div class="q1"> 53He has filled the hungry with good things</div><div class="q2">but has sent the rich away empty.</div><div class="q1"> 54He has helped his servant Israel,</div><div class="q2">remembering to be merciful</div><div class="q1"> 55to Abraham and his descendants forever,</div><div class="q2">just as he promised our ancestors.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 56Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.</div><div class="s1">The Birth of John the Baptist</div><div class="p"> 57When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.</div><div class="p"> 59On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60but his mother spoke up and said, &#8220;No! He is to be called John.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 61They said to her, &#8220;There is no one among your relatives who has that name.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 62Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone&#8217;s astonishment he wrote, &#8220;His name is John.&#8221; 64Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, &#8220;What then is this child going to be?&#8221; For the Lord&#8217;s hand was with him.</div><div class="s1">Zechariah&#8217;s Song</div><div class="p"> 67His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:</div><div class="q1"> 68&#8220;Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,</div><div class="q2">because he has come to his people and redeemed them.</div><div class="q1"> 69He has raised up a horn#1:69 Horn here symbolizes a strong king. of salvation for us</div><div class="q2">in the house of his servant David</div><div class="q1"> 70(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),</div><div class="q1"> 71salvation from our enemies</div><div class="q2">and from the hand of all who hate us&#8212;</div><div class="q1"> 72to show mercy to our ancestors</div><div class="q2">and to remember his holy covenant,</div><div class="q2"> 73the oath he swore to our father Abraham:</div><div class="q1"> 74to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,</div><div class="q2">and to enable us to serve him without fear</div><div class="q2"> 75in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 76And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;</div><div class="q2">for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,</div><div class="q1"> 77to give his people the knowledge of salvation</div><div class="q2">through the forgiveness of their sins,</div><div class="q1"> 78because of the tender mercy of our God,</div><div class="q2">by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven</div><div class="q1"> 79to shine on those living in darkness</div><div class="q2">and in the shadow of death,</div><div class="q1">to guide our feet into the path of peace.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 80And the child grew and became strong in spirit#1:80 Or in the Spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">The Priests Begin Their Ministry</div><div class="p"> 1On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 2He said to Aaron, &#8220;Take a bull calf for your sin offering#9:2 Or purification offering; here and throughout this chapter and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. 3Then say to the Israelites: &#8216;Take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb&#8212;both a year old and without defect&#8212;for a burnt offering, 4and an ox#9:4 The Hebrew word can refer to either male or female; also in verses 18 and 19. and a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. 6Then Moses said, &#8220;This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7Moses said to Aaron, &#8220;Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9His sons brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; 11the flesh and the hide he burned up outside the camp.</div><div class="p"> 12Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.</div><div class="p"> 15Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the people&#8217;s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.</div><div class="p"> 16He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way. 17He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning&#8217;s burnt offering.</div><div class="p"> 18He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19But the fat portions of the ox and the ram&#8212;the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver&#8212; 20these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering, as Moses commanded.</div><div class="p"> 22Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.</div><div class="p"> 23Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">The Death of Nadab and Abihu</div><div class="p"> 1Aaron&#8217;s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3Moses then said to Aaron, &#8220;This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Among those who approach me</div><div class="q2">I will be proved holy;</div><div class="q1">in the sight of all the people</div><div class="q2">I will be honored.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="m">Aaron remained silent.</div><div class="p"> 4Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron&#8217;s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, &#8220;Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.&#8221; 5So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.</div><div class="p"> 6Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, &#8220;Do not let your hair become unkempt#10:6 Or Do not uncover your heads and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. 7Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the Lord&#8217;s anointing oil is on you.&#8221; So they did as Moses said.</div><div class="p"> 8Then the Lord said to Aaron, 9&#8220;You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, &#8220;Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sons&#8217; share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded. 14But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites&#8217; fellowship offerings. 15The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering#10:16 Or purification offering; also in verses 17 and 19 and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron&#8217;s remaining sons, and asked, 17&#8220;Why didn&#8217;t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Aaron replied to Moses, &#8220;Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?&#8221; 20When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.</div>
