 <div class="p">1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus&#8217; mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus&#8217; mother said to him, &#8220;They have no more wine.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4 &#8220;Woman, #2:4 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect. why do you involve me?&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;My hour has not yet come.&#8221;</div><div class="p">5His mother said to the servants, &#8220;Do whatever he tells you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.#2:6 Or from about 75 to about 115 liters</div><div class="p">7Jesus said to the servants, &#8220;Fill the jars with water&#8221;; so they filled them to the brim.</div><div class="p">8Then he told them, &#8220;Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.&#8221;</div><div class="p">They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, &#8220;Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.&#8221;</div><div class="p">11What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.</div><div class="p">12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.</div>

 <div class="p">21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24&#8220;What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are&#8212;the Holy One of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p">25 &#8220;Be quiet!&#8221; said Jesus sternly. &#8220;Come out of him!&#8221; 26The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.</div><div class="p">27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, &#8220;What is this? A new teaching&#8212;and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.&#8221; 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals Many</div><div class="p">29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon&#8217;s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.</div><div class="p">32That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered at the door, 34and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place</div><div class="p">35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37and when they found him, they exclaimed: &#8220;Everyone is looking for you!&#8221;</div><div class="p">38Jesus replied, &#8220;Let us go somewhere else&#8212;to the nearby villages&#8212;so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.&#8221; 39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.</div>

 <div class="p">14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.</div><div class="p">16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:</div><div class="q1">18 &#8220;The Spirit of the Lord is on me,</div><div class="q2">because he has anointed me</div><div class="q2">to proclaim good news to the poor.</div><div class="q1">He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners</div><div class="q2">and recovery of sight for the blind,</div><div class="q1">to set the oppressed free,</div><div class="q2">19 to proclaim the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor.&#8221; #4:19 Isaiah 61:1,2 (see Septuagint); Isaiah 58:6</div><div class="p">20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began by saying to them, &#8220;Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.&#8221;</div><div class="p">22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t this Joseph&#8217;s son?&#8221; they asked.</div><div class="p">23Jesus said to them, &#8220;Surely you will quote this proverb to me: &#8216;Physician, heal yourself!&#8217; And you will tell me, &#8216;Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">24 &#8220;Truly I tell you,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah&#8217;s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27And there were many in Israel with leprosy#4:27 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed&#8212;only Naaman the Syrian.&#8221;</div><div class="p">28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit</div><div class="p">31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.</div><div class="p">33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34&#8220;Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are&#8212;the Holy One of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p">35 &#8220;Be quiet!&#8221; Jesus said sternly. &#8220;Come out of him!&#8221; Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.</div><div class="p">36All the people were amazed and said to each other, &#8220;What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!&#8221; 37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals Many</div><div class="p">38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon&#8217;s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.</div><div class="p">40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, &#8220;You are the Son of God!&#8221; But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.</div><div class="p">42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, &#8220;I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.&#8221; 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.</div>
