How to Have Intentional Friendships PART 2Sample

How to Have Intentional Friendships PART 2

DAY 2 OF 7

The Gift of Presence

My friend Sara never seems to be in a hurry. Wherever she is, she will stop and talk to other moms, recalling details of their lives and the names of their children. Sara shows care for others in the way that she remembers them.

I first met Sara a few years ago when our daughters ended up on the same dance team. Sara engaged easily in conversation with me about my family while also sharing details of her own. We quickly became good friends, and I’ve watched as Sara brings everyone into her circle. She is quick to welcome a new person, and I’ve never seen her leave anyone out. She is someone who notices others and makes them feel welcome. And although she would brush off her ability to do this, I believe it is a gift to be able to make others feel comfortable so effortlessly.

When someone needs a hand, Sara is there to help. When someone needs a listening ear, Sara is quick to sit with them and slow to leave. And even though I know that Sara’s life and work are very demanding, and her schedule is often full, you never get the sense that she doesn’t have time for you. She has mastered the skill of being present with those around her, and it is a benefit to all who know her.

In a world that can be very fast paced and busy, we are meant to demonstrate the qualities that God values, traits such as mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience—and to do this well will take our time. It will take us being willing to slow down and see the people in front of us. This is a skill that takes intentionality, but the results will be, as my friend Sara knows, a deeper connection to those around us.

Today’s Act of Friendship: Notice someone who needs you to be present with them and set aside your to-do list to be a friend.
