Daily Bible Reading - December 2020 God's Life-Giving Word of JoySample
December 5
Introduction
Today’s reading is the concluding chapter to the book of Daniel. It takes the form of an epilogue that seeks to describe the time remaining until the end. The chapter includes a reference to a resurrection of the dead and concludes with an exhortation to Daniel to be faithful to the end.
Scripture Reading
Daniel 12:1-13
Today’s Key Verse: Daniel 12:3b
“Those who have taught many people to do what is right will shine like the stars forever.”
Reflect
The chapter opens with Daniel receiving a message about salvation and resurrection, followed by judgment and reward or punishment. The “Awful Horror” (verse 11) is a reference to a pagan image set up in the Jerusalem Temple by foreign conquerors (see Daniel 9:27 and 11:31). As noted in the reading from December 1, Jesus also made reference to the “Awful Horror” (Mark 13:14). The number of days mentioned in verse 11 is believed to refer to the time scheduled to elapse from the desecration of the Temple until the end of time. What is Daniel promised for his faithfulness (verse 13)? What were your thoughts as you read this chapter?
Pray
Almighty God, thank you for the gift of eternal life. Keep me faithful and close to you. Fill me with your wisdom so that I shine brightly, reflecting your love and praising you. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those who are grieving the death of a loved one
Tomorrow’s Reading
Revelation 1:1-20: John of Patmos has a vision of the risen Christ.
