14 Days to Integrating Faith and FitnessSample
Love in Action
At the height of his ministry, Jesus didn’t amass another crowd and teach more Scriptures. He didn’t have a theological debate with the Pharisees again. He didn’t post one more Instagram story, one more blog, or attend one more meeting. He loved others by serving. We’re tempted to equate love with warm feelings. Jesus loved, not with warm Hallmark-channel feelings, but with action.
Why is it that serving others gives us purpose in life? Because it’s as we serve that we connect deeply not just with those we’re serving, but with our Creator who serves us. Who knows better an object's purpose than the one who created it (Romans 9:6-29)? God uses your service to others to bring purpose to your life because:
- Your past (things you’ve done and things done to you) begins to be redeemed. Somehow it begins to make sense WHY God brought you through what He brought you through: to help others. God comforts us so we can comfort others.
- Your unique, God-given passions come alive. Joy abounds in serving others, especially as you realize God has gifted you in unique ways, with activities that bring you life.
- You realize people aren’t a means to your end (to get you what you want), but are a gift. They shape your purpose because they have shaped, and continue to shape, you into the image of Jesus. You can’t go on this search for purpose by yourself and expect to take new ground. Clarity of purpose is reached when you live in healthy, God-honoring community.
If you want your faith and fitness to grow more integrated, find your purpose.
