And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.50.3"></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.50.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh&#8217;s court, &#8220;If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.50.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">&#8216;My father made me swear an oath and said, &#8220;I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.&#8221; Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.50.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.50.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Pharaoh said, &#8220;Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.50.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.50.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh&#8217;s officials accompanied him&#8212;the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.50.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">besides all the members of Joseph&#8217;s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father&#8217;s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.50.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Chariots and horsemen</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">50:9 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">charioteers</span></span></span><span class="content"> also went up with him. It was a very large company.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.50.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.50.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.50.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, &#8220;The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.&#8221; That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">50:11 </span><span class="fq">Abel Mizraim </span><span class="ft">means </span><span class="fq">mourning </span><span class="fqa">of the </span><span class="fq">Egyptians</span><span class="fqa">.</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.50.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.50.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">So Jacob&#8217;s sons did as he had commanded them: </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.50.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.50.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Joseph Reassures His Brothers</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.50.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.50.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">When Joseph&#8217;s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, &#8220;What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.50.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">So they sent word to Joseph, saying, &#8220;Your father left these instructions before he died: </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.50.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8216;This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.&#8217; Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.&#8221; When their message came to him, Joseph wept.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.50.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.50.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. &#8220;We are your slaves,&#8221; they said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.50.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.50.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">But Joseph said to them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.50.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.50.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So then, don&#8217;t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.&#8221; And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Death of Joseph</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.50.21"></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.50.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father&#8217;s family. He lived a hundred and ten years </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.50.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">and saw the third generation of Ephraim&#8217;s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph&#8217;s knees.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">50:23 </span><span class="ft">That is, were counted as his</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.50.23"></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.50.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then Joseph said to his brothers, &#8220;I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.50.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, &#8220;God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.50.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.50.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.</span></span></div>

            <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.1.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.1.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.1.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.1.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.1.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">For John baptized with</span></span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:5 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">in</span></span></span><span class="content"> </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">water, but in a few days you will be baptized with</span></span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:5 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">in</span></span></span><span class="content"> </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">the Holy Spirit.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.1.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.1.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then they gathered around him and asked him, &#8220;Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.1.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.1.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">He said to them: </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.1.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.1.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.1.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.1.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.1.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.1.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">&#8220;Men of Galilee,&#8221; they said, &#8220;why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.1.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.1.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day&#8217;s walk</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:12 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 5/8 mile or about 1 kilometer</span></span></span><span class="content"> from the city. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.1.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.1.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.1.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.1.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.1.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">and said, &#8220;Brothers and sisters,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:16 </span><span class="ft">The Greek word for </span><span class="fq">brothers and sisters </span><span class="ft">(<span class="tl">adelphoi</span>) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in 6:3; 11:29; 12:17; 16:40; 18:18, 27; 21:7, 17; 28:14, 15.</span></span></span><span class="content"> the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.1.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.1.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.1.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.1.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.1.19"></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;For,&#8221; said Peter, &#8220;it is written in the Book of Psalms:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;May his place be deserted;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">let there be no one to dwell in it,&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:20 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="PSA.69.25">Psalm 69:25</span></span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">and,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;May another take his place of leadership.&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">1:20 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="PSA.109.8">Psalm 109:8</span></span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.1.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.1.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">beginning from John&#8217;s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.1.22"></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.1.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.1.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then they prayed, &#8220;Lord, you know everyone&#8217;s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.1.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="ACT.1.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.</span></span></div>
