SWHW Bible Reading Plan - Year 2 January 2021

DAY 7 OF 21

January 11

Top Takeaway from Jessica Hatton:

Reliance on the Lord brings peace, but reliance on fellow man brings unrest.

When was the last time you truly rested? I’m not simply talking about a great night of sleep. I’m referring to a different kind of rest—a rest that is free of fear, anxiety, worry, and comparison.  A peace that allows you to fully enjoy the place where God has you. I’m talking about a true rest and peace that comes from the hope that God has for you!

When we read the beginning of Asa’s rule, we see just that. Asa’s reliance on God brought rest and peace to the kingdom. Asa was an instrument used by God to bring peace to the land. In 15:12 the kingdom (led by Asa) entered into a covenant with the Lord and promised to seek Him first with all their hearts and souls. There was peace in the land that came from Asa putting God in His proper place.

But, Asa’s life takes a drastic turn. In chapter 16 when Asa suffers pressure from the king of Israel, rather than calling to God in complete dependence (like we see in 14:11), he makes an alliance with the king of Syria. Despite the fact that God had already proved Himself able, Asa traded reliance on God for reliance on his fellow man. Rather than repenting, he became angry and even more disobedient.

Could any of your unrest be from placing your trust in man rather than the Son of Man?

Regardless of what the world tries to tell us, we can only expect to find true lasting peace and rest from the Creator of peace and rest—our triune God. Any other outside source will prove to be fleeting and unsatisfying. Rest in His strength to get you through the battle for there is no lasting peace and fruit apart from the Lord.

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me” (John 15:4 ESV).

Lord, I ask You to forgive us for our tendency to want to please man rather than focusing on pleasing You. I pray that we would cast aside anything that is distracting us from You. I pray that we would obey Your commands and that we would be empowered to be Your ambassadors for peace in a world of disorder. Let us experience freedom from fears, worries, people pleasing, and depression, and be able to feel the peace that comes from following a God who is over all.  Amen.
