The Gentle Easy Path To Destruction

This begins the demise of Gideon. I totally understand you were hoping for an encouraging hopeful devotion today. But this isn’t it. Every once in a while we should probably be reminded that a cushy simple life with a lot of money isn’t the solution. 

Even as I write this I feel the pain of that. We often think, "It would be easier if I just had a little more." 

After everything Gideon accomplished, he takes some gold and makes a cultic worship object that becomes a snare for him and all of his family. 

Temple Grandin was a movie released in 2010. Temple was an innovator in animal husbandry and, ultimately, the humane treatment of livestock. One of the major developments she made was a gentle steady slope for cows to walk up to go into an abattoir. The purpose was to keep them calm and comfortable all the way up to their ultimate demise.  It’s a brutal analogy. 

Gideon’s weakness is that he powers down and takes the comfortable life as an option. It is his ultimate demise. Our life isn’t supposed to be a relaxed cruisy journey where we can rest on our laurels. 

‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it’, (Matthew 7:13).
