The 10 Commandments: Devotions From Time Of GraceSample
God’s sixth law
When God invented the human race, he simultaneously invented the two genders, the mad wonder of sexuality, and human reproduction. His very last creative act during Creation week was to invent marriage, the invisible bond that creates “one flesh” till death us do part. He was so excited about that gift to his first man and woman that he performed their wedding immediately upon creation of Eve.
God invented human sexuality for the delight of married couples and to bring about childbirth. Out of love for people and their marriages, he put his shield around married couples and forbade sexual behavior outside of marriage: “You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14). That prohibition includes two unmarried people, and even more important, sex with a person who is married to someone else.
Especially now in a fallen world, marriage from God’s point of view is more important than ever for the stability and happiness of all human society. If men and women were sexually faithful only to their spouses, STDs would disappear. Every child would have a mommy and daddy to tuck her into bed each night. Without cheating and affairs, the divorce rate would plunge.
Governmental laws restricting sexual behavior are being dismantled one by one. God’s sixth law has not been repealed: “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and the sexually immoral” (Hebrews 13:4).
You break it at your peril.
