Growing as an Enneagram One: The PerfectionistSample
Going to Seven in Growth
In seasons of growth, Ones pick up the positive behaviors of an Enneagram Seven, the Enthusiast. Sevens are all about finding the next adventure or fun thing to do or try. They often embody joy and spread it like candy at a parade.
As a One, you are likely to recognize some of this in yourself, and it might surprise you to know that not everyone feels this lightness and joy when they are in seasons of growth. It just seems so logical to be more Seven-ish in growth seasons.
Not every Enneagram type needs fun, spontaneity, or laughter to be their growth work, but you do. In fact, most of the work Ones have to do in growth is letting go and having fun. This can be particularly hard; you’re motivated by being good. It can feel like you need to be doing good. Fun and joy don’t feel like they’re accomplishing anything. You might instead feel like you’re forgetting something you should be doing. It requires a lot of faith to let go and trust God that this is indeed good for you.
Enneagram Sevens are spontaneous, enthusiastic, upbeat, and usually extroverted individuals. When healthy, they focus their energy on their talents, goals, brightening moods, and building thriving relationships. They remind us that there is always something for which to be grateful and celebrations are one of the gifts of being alive.
On the other hand, when Sevens are unhealthy, they will be scattered, irrational, and irresponsible, chasing anything that’ll give them a momentary high at the cost of all else. These negative traits might make you cringe at the thought of becoming more like a Seven, but trust me, a little Seven-ness is just what your doctor ordered.
So what does going to Seven in growth look like?
· It looks like becoming more optimistic and not only noticing the flaws in your surroundings
· It looks like having endless good ideas for fun things to do
· It looks like not being as critical of yourself or others
· It looks like laughter
· It looks like not being as fixated on making things perfect
· It looks like enjoying planning for the future
Seven-ness equals freedom and joy in the life of a One. These are very necessary for a One’s spiritual growth and sanity.

About this Plan
The Enneagram is an ancient personality typology. The theory behind it is that a person assumes one of nine personalities in childhood as a reaction to discovering the world as a scary, unkind place, and thus is unlikely to accept their true self. This devotional is designed for Enneagram Ones, also known as the Perfectionist.
