I Said to Myself: Overcoming False Beliefs

DAY 4 OF 7

Be Bold

False Belief: I don’t know if I have what it takes!

● Caution: self-doubt

Feeling inadequate is something I struggled with a lot when I was younger. I always felt the need to 'perform' or 'do more' to stand-out so my inadequacies would not show so easily.

I love how the Bible gives us so much hope and shares so many relatable stories.  One of them I am reminded of is in the book of Judges, chapter 6. This is a true story of a man that struggled with not being enough.

In verses 11-13 it says, "Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites.  The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”

“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.”

Gideon was also struggling with hopelessness. He goes on to even question how the Lord can say that he is a mighty hero and a man of valor. But the Lord quickly affirms him and tells him in verse 16, "The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.”

We know that Gideon wrestled with the whole idea of trusting the Lord's will and even asked for signs. We see later in the chapter that Gideon was wholeheartedly convinced of God's will for him and the people of Israel, and he obeys God for the task at hand.

This is boldness personified! May we all declare today: “I will take healthy risks with confidence and boldness!

Remember: If you struggle with self-doubt telling yourself, “I don’t know if I have what it takes”, make this declaration:

My confidence is in Christ alone! EPH 3:12 (ESV)
