What Is God's Plan for My Life?Sample
No Guarantees
“Peter answered him, ‘Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat.”
What guarantee did Peter have that this walking on the water thing was going to work out well for him? It’s not like Jesus told him it would be a great experience. Jesus said nothing to reassure Peter. All He said was, “come.”
We all want God to give us more clarity in the decisions we face and to reassure us that everything will be all right. We find ourselves with one foot out of the boat, thinking, “This is crazy. Jesus, please make this easier.”
But often, that is because we are focusing on the obstacles we face.
Peter didn’t let the impossible-looking obstacle he faced stop him from obeying his call. Jesus said, “come,” and Peter came. Peter wanted to get to Jesus. The water just happened to be in his way.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
The Christian walk is an act of faith. We should expect a lack of clarity.
The problem for Peter started when he began paying more attention to the problem than to the solution.
Jesus wants our faith and relationship with Him to grow. Sometimes for that to happen, God must bring us to situations we can’t handle without Him.
Whatever decision you are facing, don’t let the obstacles get in the way of the call you are sensing. It may look scary. It may seem impossible. But if Jesus says, “come,” come.
Pray: Lord, I confess I want to have the faith to “walk on water,” but not at the risk of drowning. Please help me focus so intently on getting closer to you that the raging waves around me disappear from view. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
