LONGING FOR THE SUNRISE
“I wouldn’t long for the sunrise if it wasn’t for the night.”
When I was younger my family always took a summer vacation to the beach. I’m not a morning person at all; I would much rather sleep late any chance I get. However, when I visit the beach I like to wake up early just to see the beautiful sunrises. My favorite moment is when the sky is almost completely dark and the sun just barely begins to spread light before becoming visible. It’s in that moment that you know the nighttime is almost over and the day is about to begin.
I have experienced this same moment in my spiritual walk as well. There have been times in my life when the darkness of my sin surrounded me like night. And like the writer of Psalm 130, I have cried “out of the depths” of my despair to God, longing “more than the watchmen for the morning” for the light of His forgiveness to break across the dark sky of my heart. Just like the sun always rises, so the forgiveness of God always comes to those to seek it. In 1 John 1:9, God promises if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us. God also promises us that one day there will be no more night (Rev. 22:5), no more sin, and no more darkness. When I see sunrises, I remember how kind and gracious God is. The nighttime is almost over, and the day is about to begin.
