Get to Know Him, Part 1

The most beautiful thing about your decision to follow Jesus is just that: It’s following Jesus. It’s not about rules or religion, it’s about a relationship. So the most important thing you can do from here is get to know Jesus!

Think about it, we can all agree that a relationship in which you never talk to, spend time with, or pay attention to the other person is super dysfunctional! It’s empty. How would they know you love them or trust them? Simple answer: They wouldn’t.

Jesus wants to have a strong, close relationship with you, not a distant one. If we say we trust Him with our eternity, but don’t have that personal relationship with Him, we’re kidding ourselves and missing out. Jesus wants to partner with you here and now to bring hope and healing into places that are hurting. He didn’t just die to save you from hell—He died so you could be part of bringing heaven to earth!

So how do we get to know Jesus? We get to know Him by talking to Him and paying attention to how He lived. Recognize that when we spend a lot of time with someone, we start to pick up and subconsciously repeat the little things they say and do. You could probably do a pretty good imitation of your best friend. That’s the kind of relationship Jesus wants to have with us—that close, personal knowledge. In fact, the word “Christian” means “little Christ.” He wants us to know Him so well that people literally see Him through our lives! 

To start paying attention to Jesus, we have to read His Word. And the Gospels are a great place to begin engaging with the Bible. The New Testament is the second part of the Bible that records what happened during and after Jesus was on earth, and it starts with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They offer four unique perspectives and accounts of Jesus’ life.
