The Six Foundation Teachings of ChristianitySample
Laying on Hands (Part 3)
Walking in the Spirit
There is nothing like a best friend. Someone who always has your back and will drop everything when you need help.
But even the best of friends cannot be there twenty-four hours a day. And even though they may know you well, they do not know the deepest heartfelt things that may bother you from time to time.
But when we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive a friend who has our back, who knows our deepest, innermost thoughts, and who can bring the full power of the Father to bear on any situation.
That’s what walking in the Spirit is all about. Using the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the issues of this world. And even more importantly, using the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the passions, lusts, and desires of human nature to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ.
This is the work of the Holy Spirit. To transform us by degrees into the image of Jesus Christ so that we can live with Him and the Father.
The scripture tells us that we MUST be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). It is the work of the Holy Spirit and walking in the Spirit that gets us there. His job is to perfect us because we cannot perfect ourselves.
The thing that underpins walking in the Spirit is what you think about. If your mind is centered on the passions, lusts, and desires of the flesh, then you need to walk in the Spirit. Such thoughts lead to sinfulness, fear, depression, anger, and worse.
But when we walk in the Spirit, we take those thoughts captive and destroy them before they take hold and turn to evil actions. We can pray, read the word, meditate on scripture, sing uplifting songs, speak in tongues, and focus on the Lord. These are all forms of walking in the Spirit because they shift our thinking away from the negatives to the Lord.
Consider these questions:
- Do you suffer from negative thoughts and emotions that lead you astray?
- Do you use the power of the Holy Spirit to crush those thoughts and replace them?
A prayer point:
- Ask the Lord to teach you the ways of walking in the Spirit so that you can find peace and not be led astray by the passions of the flesh.
