Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms (8-14)Sample
Psalm 14: Foolishness or Faith?
Have you ever doubted that there is a God? The doubt of God’s existence often comes during trials or when crushed in spirit. This is exactly when the father of lies whispers. But it is a lie that we can send on its way the minute it hits us. There are many who take the lie as truth and therefore become corrupt and foolish. That foolishness is planted deep in the heart of the one who says there is no God. Verse 1 says,
The fool has said in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.
We know that Jesus Christ is eternally good. If He is only good, we can believe that He would never lie. This is just where faith comes in. We believe that Jesus is God because He says He is. And we can believe the truth of Nehemiah 9:6, “You are the LORD, You alone.” And in Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.”
This is what we are to be teaching our children: there truly is a God, and there is only One God. Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us what else to teach, “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
The fool does not believe in God nor seek Him. But we are not foolish who seek after the One True God. The Lord sees when you drive doubt away and seek Him! Verse 2 of Psalm 14 states,
The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
He is real. His eyes are on us, He is with us, and He is our shelter. Verses 5 and 6 say,
For God is with the generation of the righteous (verse 5)
The LORD is his refuge (verse 6)
To Do with the Kids:
Read Psalm 14 together and discuss what happens to those who do not believe there is a God, and those who do believe. When looking at creation we might ask, “Who made this?” Nehemiah 9:6 tells us (memorize this verse as a family).
