Five things stuck out to me in this passage of Scripture:

1. Although Israel was chosen by God for a special purpose, He loves all people and wants everyone to have a relationship with Him.

2. God is holy and intolerant of sin.

3. God’s judgment is not based on prejudice and revenge, but on fairness and justice.

4. God does not delight in judgment or legalism, but salvation.

5. God is impartial. He judges every single person by the same standards.

Ultimately, what we see here is that God punished His people in order to bring them back to Him, and He still does the same thing in our lives. Punishment stinks, but the end result of growing and looking more like Jesus is worth it. 

I think about this a lot as I steward and discipline young children. It seems like every time I turn around, I am putting someone in time out and talking through why sharing our toys is important. While it’s exhausting and hard, I think, “Would I rather them learn these lessons now or in 20 years when they are married?” Of course, I want them to learn now! Growth is never comfortable, but when we bring things to light and call them out, we have the opportunity to experience God in a deeper way.

Thank You, Lord, for knowing what we need better than we could ever understand. You are faithful and I am thankful for Your hand that guides me. I pray for every woman reading this today. I pray they lean into Your guiding hand and walk obediently! We love You, Lord!  Amen.
