WITH GOD YOU ARE ENOUGH
Often we are more prone to give help than to receive it. We have difficulty asking for help, especially when we have nothing to give in return. Those are the times we feel most vulnerable. This perhaps is the most pivotal lesson to learn and adopt in order to walk in complete freedom.
The most beautiful relationship we can have with our Creator is to stand vulnerable before Him—confident, free from all shame. Shame thrives on believing the lie that we are alone. That is what happened to Adam and Eve when they first disobeyed God.
Genesis 3:7–11 tells us that Adam and Eve sinned and then realized they were naked.
Therefore, they hid.
They covered themselves among the trees of the Garden.
They were ashamed.
Their disobedience opened the door for shame to enter humanity. The shame that covered Adam and Eve is the same that covers us today—the sense of feeling unloved and unworthy, never being good enough. When we act out a belief of “not good enough,” we hide behind outward perfectionism. That has given us for many years a false sense of comfort through external appearance, accomplishments, money, connections. We find ourselves
hiding,
cowering,
afraid.
The good news is that shame cannot survive in the light; it only thrives in darkness. Fear brings darkness and feeds the lie that because we need help, somehow we are weak. This lie will keep us living behind a mask of pretentiousness, which also leads to arrogance and a tendency to belittle others who are in need of help.
If we believe that asking for help is a weakness, then feelings of shame and inadequacy will cause us to create an emotional barrier. We will either detach our emotions to minimize the pain or we will attach false beliefs about ourselves or God.
The key is to realize that with God you are enough! You must choose to believe that you are enough to be loved and to love without external achievements. Just for who you are. You are enough as a person created in God’s image, who carries His value and dignity. God looked for Adam and Eve the moment they disobeyed. He was not ashamed of them. And to this day, He is looking for us, to deliver us from our own fears and the lies that would try to steal our relationship with Him.
This is your moment to stop and embrace this truth! This is a part of your new journey. Sometimes you will need to pause and remind yourself of it, even daily, or moment by moment.
The second way to make truth become part of you is by journaling it and sharing your experience of overcoming it with others. Most people don’t take the time to process their thoughts or feelings. If you are afraid of your own thoughts, you will be imprisoned by the unresolved past and crippled by the unknown future. If you are afraid of your emotions, which travel much faster than your thoughts, you will find yourself ruled by them, rather than using them as a source of strength and comfort. When we ignore what we fear, it does not go away. We empower it to enslave us.
We must realize that during various seasons of life we need one another and most importantly we need God. When we allow Him to meet the needs in every area of our lives, we create a healthy dependence on Him and He heals us internally. When He is replaced with anyone else—a person, a possession, a situation—that unhealthy dependence won’t meet our needs in a lasting way. The external successes are short-lived. Only what’s being developed inside of us can be carried into eternity.
PERSONAL REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
Take the time to think and journal about the current journey of your life:
- What is being built inside of you during this season?
- Describe yourself without your external achievements.
- Who are you on the inside? What makes up your core?
- In what areas of your life are you still struggling with shame?
- Are you comfortable asking for help? If not, what practical steps do you need to take in order to let go of the need to be in control and be able to graciously receive?
