Dishing Up Devotions for Homeschooling Families

DAY 7 OF 7

Learning to Love Learning

Most homeschool moms would agree we want our children to love learning. While I’ve always loved to discover new information and aced every test growing up, I recall very little of what my teachers actually taught. I became adept at following instructions, completing tasks, and cramming facts and concepts into my brain before a test. I was smart…but not necessarily knowledgeable. I simply learned how to get good grades.

But I want my children to develop a love of scholarship and retain what they’ve studied. I want to cultivate lifelong learners with a broad knowledge base. By this, I will equip them to understand the challenges facing our world and empower them to do something about it.

As homeschoolers, we have the opportunity to intentionally disciple our children to build a solid foundation of true knowledge that leads to wisdom and discipline. We get to start with God’s Word and nurture our kids to become knowledgeable in the things that matter most.

We live in a world where Google has replaced knowledge. If we don’t know something, we simply type the question into our browser’s search bar, or ask Alexa or Siri, and trust the answers they feed us. So how do we teach our children to gain knowledge? We teach them to check their sources, research varying information on any given subject, and weigh it against the truth of God’s Word. We teach them not to share Facebook posts without checking the facts first, so they don’t perpetuate the distribution of false information. We require them to share only educated opinions because the Bible warns us of the power of our words. Through the pursuit of knowledge, we equip our children to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Family Activity

Choose one topic to study together as a family this week. Seek out knowledge from the Bible, the library, and from a living person, if possible, to grow in knowledge on the subject. Maybe you want to study a topic in history and can learn about it from the Bible, then expand your knowledge through additional resources. This is also a great time to teach your children how to study their Bibles if you haven’t already done so. Explore the various features in their Bible and explain how it is laid out, with the Old and New Testaments, sixty-six books, chapters and verses, and so on.
