Faith Over PerfectionSample

Read: Genesis 25:1–11; Hebrews 6:13–20
SOAP: Hebrews 6:17–18
In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath, so that we who have found refuge in him may find strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us through two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God to lie.
God surely kept His promises to Abraham and Abraham’s life is marked by incredible faith. Though he was not perfect, Abraham believed God again and again. He was counted as righteous before God because of his faith.
Genesis 25 and 26 are not in chronological order; the narrative of Abraham’s death is included first to offer closure to his chapter as the guarantor of the promise. Abraham lived for 175 years, meaning he lived for another fifteen years after the birth of Jacob and Esau. Abraham saw God’s promises playing out. Not only did God make him the father of many nations and tribes through his seven other sons, but Abraham knew Isaac’s descendants as well.
At the end of his life, Abraham still acted in faith. Though he gave gifts to his six younger sons and to Ishmael, Abraham left all he had to Isaac, the heir of the promise. Isaac was the one through whom God would continue to bless the nations of the earth and whose descendants would inherit the land. God’s promise is unchangeable, no matter what. God demonstrated the unchanging nature of His plan and purpose not only to Abraham but to Isaac and Jacob as well. Abraham’s faith impacted future generations to have faith in His promises and His covenant and to walk in continued obedience to Him.
Abraham ensured the promises of God would be fulfilled in the following generations. While we may not see the fullness of God’s plan and purposes played out in our lifetimes, it is important that we teach and instruct younger generations to walk with God so His promises and purposes can continue. His purpose is unchangeable, and we can find encouragement in His unchanging nature. We, like Abraham, have a responsibility to not only follow God in our lifetime but to also prepare future generations to believe in and follow God.
Prayer
God, You are unchanging. It is impossible for You to lie. When You make a promise, You undoubtedly fulfill it. I believe Your promises are unchanging and trustworthy. Help me train and encourage those who come after me to follow You with their whole heart. Amen.
About this Plan

When we waiver in our understanding of what God asks of us, we can study the lives of God’s people and look to their examples. This study shows the lives of Abram and Isaac. God gave them both a great promise, but they had moments when their actions did not align with their faith. God credited Abraham as righteous long before He required anything but faith from him.
