Free Grace Theology

DAY 3 OF 7

Assurance

Free Grace Theology Gives Us Assurance in This Life That We Will Go to Heaven When We Die

We like to claim as proof positive the things written—for us who believe in the name of the Son of God—that we might KNOW that we have eternal life. A new believer can and should have the assurance of salvation from the moment of belief in God’s promises. All you have to have for your security is that one promise. One promise from God is enough.

“But what about fruit?” Every new believer will have some fruit. That fruit might be internal, as in the fruit of the Spirit. If you have the Spirit, which according to 1 Corinthians 12:13 every new believer does, then all of His fruit is at your disposal.

But how much fruit, how observable is the fruit, and what type of fruit all have subjective answers. The only essential thing we must have for assurance is God’s promises in His Word.

Spiritual fruit can be corroborating, but it is not determinative. A “backsliding” Christian might go a long time without much positive, observable fruit. Or false prophets can outwardly display lots of “good fruit” (preaching, giving, worshipping, etc.). We can see the fruit; only God can see the root.

In the Parable of the Tares, Jesus told his disciples not to distinguish between the wheat and the tares. He says leave that to the Lord of the harvest.

Free Grace Theology Delivers Us from Fruit Inspecting

Fruit-inspecting involves judging other people, and Jesus had a lot to say about not judging other people (Matthew 7:1–5). Because our assurance does not depend on our good fruit, we can be free from the painful task of fruit inspecting: our own or that of others.

Free Grace Theology promises present assurance of our salvation because it does not depend on perseverance in good works until the end of our physical lives on earth to go to heaven. This assurance brings an abiding peace to saints who still find themselves sinning after years in the faith.

Grace is free. Receive and enjoy it. It is that simple.

About this Plan

Free Grace Theology

Free Grace Theology is a devotional series based on the book Living by Grace by Dr. Dave Anderson. This first devotional plan highlights six aspects of Free Grace theology that bring the child of God to greater assurance, greater intimacy, greater motivation, and greater understanding of God than previously experienced.
