Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the World

DAY 33 OF 40

First Thought

Betrayed by Judas and then arrested with the help of the mob, Jesus is brought before the Sanhedrin. Jesus was undoubtedly considered a troublemaker. In Jerusalem alone, Jesus had ridden into the city leading a crowd, he’d disrupted business in the temple, been at the center of controversial debates, even predicted the destruction of the temple. But the Jewish authorities needed a case for execution. They wanted Him dead. At the High Priest’s house, Jesus remained silent even in the face of false testimonies that contradicted one another. This is no fair and impartial trial but rather the search for a charge that could be made to stick in a case before Pilate. It was the High Priest’s direct question about His identity that provoked Jesus to speak. Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One? Are you the Messiah? The time had come for Jesus to publicly reveal who He was. Jesus’ affirmation was all they needed.

What Does the Bible Say?

Why do you imagine Jesus stayed silent for so long through the ‘trial’?

Living it Out

In what ways, large or small, have you been the victim of injustice?

Responding in Prayer

Holy God, you know the pain of injustice. This is the situation I want to pray for today (…). I pray for mercy, justice, and humility. Amen.
