WHAT TO EXPECT
Like all prophecies, there are multiple commentaries with multiple views on who the “beast” in Revelation 13 represents when these events take place. No matter our individual views on the end times, there are two things we can glean from this passage without wading into a deeper interpretation of end times prophecies.
First—that beast represents an idol, someone who desires to be worshiped and draw glory away from God and on to themselves. There are many in our culture who, without even claiming to be a god, vie for our worship and adoration. Whether it’s an actor, musician, athlete, politician, or even a pastor, we must never honor or worship the creation over the creator. All art, talent, intellect, and beauty find their origin in the Creator. God alone is worthy of all praise and worship.
Second—that beast is given authority to persecute believers. Many times in Scripture, believers are warned to expect persecution. In John 15, Jesus tells us, “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” In 1 Peter 4, we are told to not be surprised when we must suffer for the sake of Christ but to rejoice in it. Paul in 2 Timothy 3:12 plainly tells us, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” So, as believers, we should not be surprised when the world hates us, mocks us, and persecutes us for our faith and allegiance to Christ.
But we can take comfort in knowing that anything we may face here is temporary and our hope is secure in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
FAMILY CONNECTION
Play a game of “This or That.” Come up with two scenarios and everyone must choose which one they would rather do. “Would you rather eat worms covered in spaghetti sauce or spaghetti covered in dirt?” Questions can be as crazy or simple as you want. Scripture warns us not to follow the things that seem exciting or strong but are against God's law. We are tempted every day to say, do, and think things that disappoint God. Take some time to pray as a family that God will give you the strength to battle that temptation in your life.
