Finding God in the DesertSample
Listen to God in the Desert
We see Elijah on Mt Carmel as one of God’s many greatest encounters that displays His power and might. Now after defeating the prophets of Baal, Elijah went through his own desert journey. Jezebel tried to kill Elijah. He was afraid and ran for His life. Tired and discouraged, he arrives at Mount Horeb, and goes into a cave to rest and hide.
And when the Lord appeared to him, Elijah poured out his heart. He said that he was the only one left and that his life was in danger. Then the Lord commanded Elijah to stand atop the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord was about to pass by.
The Lord wasn’t there in a great and powerful wind, He didn’t reveal himself through an earthquake, and he didn’t appear in fire, but in a gentle whisper. Now even though Elijah wasn’t feeling good about himself, he listened and did what God asked him.
In your desert journey, you may very well ask God for greater signs—visible signs—but forget to hold onto a deep intimate fellowship with God. God’s gentle whisper is what you need today.
Friends, God wants you to stay in the desert till He brings deliverance. Fear and depression will taunt you in your desert journey but remember God will come through. You are not alone. In Elijah’s journey, God gave him the counsel of passing on his mission to Elisha. When you don’t have God as your primary shelter in your desert wanderings, you will begin to panic, you will begin to question, and doubt God’s sovereignty.
The questions we often ask ourselves in these wanderings are: How did I get here in the middle of nowhere? When will I escape this place? How long is this journey going to last? But the right question we need to ask ourselves, friends, is: Am I listening to God’s gentle voice in the middle of the desert?
Prayer:
Dear Father, help me to attune my ears to listen to you and you alone. For great is your love and faithfulness. Thank you for being with me on this journey. Amen.
