Because We Care – It’s All About the ConversationSample
HOW TO START A NORMAL CONVERSATION
Did you manage to ask a friend some open-ended questions recently to get to know them and/or their spiritual beliefs?
Have any of you ever been in a sales position, or had to ‘cold call’ people to ask them to help with something? Were you nervous? What is it about these roles that make you feel nervous? What is it that helps you feel confident?
As you read in John 4.4-16 do you think Jesus’ question in v. 10 was serious, or might this have been humorous conversational ‘banter’?
How about her reply in v. 11, was it serious, or might she also have been humoring him?
Do you think it possible that Jesus’ comment in v. 13 – and also her reply in v. 15, might both have had a tone of humor in them?
The conversation took a serious turn from v. 16 onwards. What might Jesus have been trying to achieve in the conversation prior to this? (What obstacles stood in the way of them having an open conversation?)
Please watch the video, continue to read below, and then meditate on today's Scripture references.
CONSIDER:
Think about some of the key points made in this video:
1. Remove the agenda
2. Take an interest in what they believe
3. Continue with sincere questions
4. Engage Authentically with an ear open to the Spirit
The freedom of the conversation has a lot to do with the dynamics of the conversation.
Every conversation with different because every person was different.
What do you think of the suggestion that, if we’re struggling to engage in spiritual conversations, we try removing the ‘gospel agenda’ from the front of the conversation? Is this useful, or a compromise? Why?
REFLECTION:
What's one thing you have got out of this devotion today?
Who will you attempt to engage in a conversation this week, to better understand their spiritual
thoughts?
PRAYER POINTS:
- For a growing love for people, so you will be motivated to help and encourage others in their faith journey.
- For God to lead you to people you can engage in conversation with to do this!
Be encouraged as you share the gospel!

The great commission gives us a clear purpose, but reaching people starts with connection and conversation! “I have become all things to all people that by all possible means I might save some.” This plan encourages and equips us to engage with people through everyday spiritual conversations in the hope they take steps toward Jesus.
