The Bible: Fake News or Good News?Sample
How Do We Share About the Bible?
As we engage with the Bible and enter this story that leads to Jesus and invites us to become like Jesus, we will be introduced to a way of life that is directed toward serving others—because that was Jesus’ focus during His time on earth. He once said that He “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” As His followers, we’ve been tasked to do the same: to focus our attention on others and loving them as Jesus would. That’s why it’s so important for us not just to know and live the words of Jesus, but also to share them with others.
A passage of Scripture that many have found helpful to learn how to share about the Bible with others comes from Paul’s letter to his apprentice Timothy. Timothy was a young leader who was in charge of the Christian community in Ephesus. As a Christ follower, Timothy knew that he had been called by God to share the wisdom of Scripture with the people around him.
To help him do that, Paul encouraged him to set an example in the way he talked, acted, loved, and lived. One of the most effective ways we can share the good news of Jesus with others is by modeling it in our lives. When we actively practice the way of Jesus in our daily lives, people will see something different in us, and they will want what we have—a hope and a peace that this world cannot take away.
Next, Paul tells Timothy to commit himself to reading the Bible with others, reminding them who Jesus is, and what He’s done. Along the way, he should help them learn how to live as students of Jesus.
How do we share our faith with others?
We set an example by how we live, and then we tell people about Jesus—who He is, and what He’s done.
Sometimes that starts with inviting someone to church or to read the Bible with you. Other times, it’s telling people about how Jesus has changed your life.
Finally, Paul tells Timothy these words:
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. 1 Timothy 4:15-16 NIV
When we commit ourselves to living out the way of Jesus and sharing His words with others, we’re playing our part in God’s mission to rescue all of humanity from the bondage of sin and restore all of creation.
This is the invitation of the Bible: to encounter Jesus and be transformed in the process. It’s a book that’s unlike any other book. It’s both human and divine. It’s story, and history, and poetry, and parable. It’s transformational, and it’s deeply relational. It’s the story of God and the story of us.
What is the Bible? The Bible is a story that leads to Jesus and invites us to become like Jesus.
About this Plan
The Bible is the most widely sold and stolen book in history. Some see it as irrelevant while others see it as inspired. Regardless, there’s no denying the influence the Bible has had on humanity. In this Plan we’ll think deeply about what the Bible is, how it’s meant to be used, and whether or not it’s even worth believing. Is the Bible fake news or good news?
