"Abiding in Christmas: Daily Advent Thoughts" by Bryan Craig
DAY TWENTY-THREE
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:8-12 ESV)
It is so interesting that not only was Jesus born in a barn, but the first people to whom God wanted to reveal the news of His birth were shepherds. Not the religious leaders, not the royal family, not the business owners, but working class men out in the field. I think this move reminds us that this King that was born was a Shepherd King. He was the Chief Shepherd who came to gather His flock, to save them, to protect them, and lay His life down for them. This is “good news of great joy for all people," as the angels said. This is good news of great joy for you and me today!
APPLICATION: Is Jesus’ birth personal to you? Do you need an angel to visit you to make it more real? Well, how about spending some time with Jesus Himself, as you talk to His Holy Spirit? Ask Him to speak to you about the meaning of Christmas and this good news for you.
