God in Three Persons: Embracing the TrinitySample

God in Three Persons: Embracing the Trinity

DAY 6 OF 6

Devotional - A Mystery Worth Exploring

After all, the Trinity remains a mystery, but not an unsearchable or unknowable one. Creation is given a glimpse of the incomprehensible immensity of God's nature through His self-revelation in the Scripture.  Through the Father, creation witnesses a creator, a lover, a righteous judge, and a compassionate ruler. Through the incarnate Son, Jesus Christ, creation sees the perfect representation of obedience, compassion, grace, mercy, forgiveness, sacrifice, and love. By the power of the Holy Spirit, creation is awakened to the Father's calling and restored to life by accepting the Son's sacrificial obedience. These are distinctive roles performed by unique persons of the one Godhead. The Father calls creation back to a relationship with Him, the Son justifies and makes the believer ‘right’ before God, and the Spirit matures the believer into Christ’s likeness.

If mankind could fully comprehend and unravel the intricate nature of this harmonious and eternal relationship between the three members of the Godhead, then God would not be a God worthy of our obedience, praise, and worship. As a result, we believers need to devote our lives to exploring who God is and who we are as a child of the LORD. As we learn from each member of the Trinity, we are to prioritize the needs of those God has placed in our lives over our own. The Trinity inspires us to find joy in friendships, to express love and pleasure to and for one another, and to try to live in peace and harmony with all of God's creation. In response to the Father’s gifts to us, we should be givers and not takers, honoring others above ourselves and working with and for one another. We humble ourselves in sacrificial submission to others in response to the Son’s sacrifice. In response to the divine counsel and comfort we receive from the Spirit, we counsel and comfort others in need. This eternal cycle of sacrificial, self-giving, and overflowing love pouring forth from the Trinity motivates the believer to flood the world with God’s love. The Father is God, The Son is God, and the Spirit is God and God is worthy of praise, worship, and obedience.

Questions for Reflection

1. How does this view of the Trinitarian nature of God impact the way you will engage the world?

2. Who are you as a person in light of the Trinity?

3. How does understanding the Trinity help you to be fulfilled individually, in relations with others, the natural world, and most of all, our Creator?

Day 5

About this Plan

God in Three Persons: Embracing the Trinity

The Trinity is a mystery but not one that is unsearchable. Throughout Scripture, we see God reveal Himself in distinct and unique ways through the three persons of the Godhead. This six-day plan will instruct the believer on who the Triune God is and who we are called to be in response. Jamey Webster is a former CEO in the oil industry and is currently studying at Dallas Theological Seminary.
