Red Letter Challenge: The 11-Day Discipleship Experience

DAY 10 OF 11

Day 10: Jesus Going

“Go and proclaim the Kingdom of God” Luke 9:60

When Jesus came down into the world to become one of us, He came to announce a message of good news. The good news is what the word “Gospel” means, after all!

The very first red letters recorded in the ministry of Jesus were to announce that the kingdom of heaven was available to all. The kingdom had always been available, but by Jesus coming into our world, this kingdom’s accessibility and realization had never been more apparent.

Not only this but the first recorded red letters of Jesus at a temple (a setting similar to what our church would look like today) were found in your reading from Luke 4 today.

I can picture this moment where Jesus is at the temple. Remember, they didn’t have phones like you and I do to find a particular Bible verse, and they didn’t even have books. They handed Jesus a scroll to begin reading the Word for the day. The practice in the temple was to read sequentially, so when the scroll was given to Jesus, He simply unrolled it to reveal the reading for the day. It just happened to be the 61st chapter of Isaiah. It wasn’t a coincidence that this was the passage that announced the very coming of Jesus Himself.

So here Jesus was, reading a prophecy about Himself. Then he rolled the scroll back up and said, “Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

This was the modern-day mic drop! #ScrollDrop.

Simply put, Jesus came to share the Good News that through His life, death, and resurrection, we can be with Him, now and forever. Praise God!

And much like Jesus came to share Good News, He now invites us to do the same. We all have a unique story to tell about how the good news of Jesus has changed us. This invitation to “go” is an invitation by God to all of us. Jesus would close all four of His Gospels with a “going’ type of command to His disciples. And even the very last red letters of Jesus before He ascended were to remind us that now we are His witnesses in this world.

At the beginning of His ministry, the Good News Himself shared the Good News about Himself. But right at the end, He entrusted us to “go” and share the Good News with others.

Challenge

Talking to someone else about Jesus can feel like a daunting task. But, the best way for you to be a witness is simply to tell your story. Write your testimony today. Answer these two questions: What has God done for you? How has God made a difference in your life? Consider sharing your story on social media using #RedLetterChallenge or publicly in a small group or Bible Study.
