25 Songs of Christmas a Musical Celebration of the SeasonSample
Day 15 — What Child Is This?
During a season of severe trials, William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) totally immersed himself in the Bible. Among many other hymns and carols, the result was the writing of the Christmas song “What Child Is This?” It was eventually set to the tune of “Greensleeves,” which is a traditional and well-recognized English folk song. Though written in Great Britain, “What Child Is This?” has become far more popular in the United States today and is often included in Christmas Eve services and programs.
The lyrics are known to many, and elicit reverence and awe for the holy time of worship that is Christmas:
What child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
And in the final verse is the response we are called to give to our King:
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own him.
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him.
The wise men knew that the birth of the King of kings was beyond anything they could imagine. To show the honor due Him, they brought gifts of high value. We think a lot about gifts this time of year—what to get our spouses, children, family and friends.
But consider this.
What are you going to get Jesus this year?
When you select a gift for a loved one, you typically think about what they like or what they’ve mentioned. We can do the same when it comes to Jesus.
Here is what’s on His wish list to receive from you:
- Love Others. (John 13:34) Are you showing love to others? Even the unlovable? When you love those around you, you are giving Jesus a precious gift.
- Obey Me. (John 14:15) The greatest gift you can ever give Jesus is your obedience, especially in the small things. Allow God to point out any area that needs correcting this Christmas, and give Him the gift of your sincere effort to obey Him.
- Forgive Others. (Matthew 6:14-15) It blesses the Father when we forgive others. Not only does it honor what Jesus died for, it keeps us in a position to receive blessings and live a happy life!
Will you bring a gift to Jesus this year?
When you hear the song “What Child Is This?” on the radio or in a church service this year, think about the angels singing, the shepherds coming to see Him, and the wise men honoring Him with gifts. Determine in your heart that you will honor Him in the same way, too.
