Start Now
You want to lead your child on mission in God’s kingdom. That’s a big challenge in today’s world. The good news is that you are already taking the first essential step that many people miss: Starting now.
It’s easy to think of “missions” as something to do later in life, when your child is older or understands certain things about Christianity. In fact, Christians of all ages tend to think of living on mission as something “someone else” does — whether that’s someone younger, someone older, someone with more money, someone who’s more comfortable traveling, someone who speaks a different language, someone braver or more heroic…
But you’re not falling into that trap. You’re saying yes to God’s call to every Christian to participate in what He is doing in the world. You’re about to teach your child a crucial lesson for Christians: missions isn’t something that happens later to someone else.
So take a moment to repeat this statement to yourself: “Living on mission isn’t for someone else; it’s for me and my family.”
Now is always a great time to start anything God has put on your heart. And as the well-known proverb says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Whether your child is a toddler or a tween, the Lord can take your family on a journey into an exciting life on mission. This doesn’t mean you have to have everything figured out now. You don’t have to have a comprehensive plan or decide on a mission statement or commit your family to reaching the world for Jesus. For now, rejoice in the beginning of something good and beautiful. We’ll get to some more practical steps in Day Two.
