Embracing A Spirit Of Adoption

DAY 1 OF 4

Our New Identity

The beginning of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is dense with good news. He begins as early as a person could—way back “before the foundation of the world,” when the Father was drafting a plan to adopt us into his family. Before we were born, before we had a chance to do anything good or bad, He set His sights on us and chose us. He wanted us.

This is huge. Before we knew God, we lived as orphans who hustled to survive. Lonely, searching for meaning, we did whatever we could to get by in the world. Like any orphan, we learned to fend for ourselves.

All the while, God beckoned us with his love. He didn’t give up, even when we shook our fists at him. As soon as we turned His way, He wrapped us in His arms. We didn’t earn our way into His family—that would be impossible! While we were still enemies, God died for us in a radical act of love that will never be taken back.

This reframes our stories. Within a few sentences, the Apostle Paul introduces us to our new identities as members of God’s family. Think about these qualities one at a time, taking a moment to dwell on each one. As you read these words, pay attention to the Holy Spirit’s testimony inside you, reminding you who you are.

In this new family, you are...

Blessed (v. 3)

Chosen (v. 4)

Blameless (v. 4)

Forgiven (v. 7)

Lavished with grace (v. 8)

How does it feel to read this list? Do you feel resistance to any of these words being applied to you? Do any stand out as particularly significant for this season? If you have a moment, let these words sink in, changing how you relate to God and the world around you. I am chosen. I am blameless. I am lavished with grace. What would it be like to live out of your identity today?

Day 2

About this Plan

Embracing A Spirit Of Adoption

If you don't understand adoption, you don't understand God, and you don't understand Christianity. In this reading plan, you'll explore your relationship with Christ through the lens of adoption. You are a member of a new family, complete with a new identity, culture, inheritance, and calling.
