He Shall Reign

DAY 10 OF 14

As we continue in the reading of Luke today, we finally see Jesus’s arrival! Joseph and Mary headed to Bethlehem as instructed by the angel, and fulfilled the prophecy that he would be born in the town of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

In this story, we begin to see the coming together of a long-awaited promise. Once again, it’s obvious that God’s original plan since creation was to send Jesus to the world as a ransom for many. In Colossians 1:15-20, it’s perfectly explained like so:

“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

Do you ever think about what a humbling beginning this was for a King? Placed in a manger normally used to feed farm animals, and from the beginning of his life, hunted by King Herod. But no kings or rulers could stop God’s hand, “so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” God put on flesh and dwelt among us; our Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

APPLICATION:

When you read this section of Luke, remember that the God of the universe is not a God that can’t empathize with us. Because Jesus is “God with us,” He understands the human experience. Read this prayer aloud:

Lord, I know you’ve established your throne in the heavens, and your kingdom rules over all. My life is a vapor, yet you show compassion to me as your child. You understand my need for you every moment of every day. Where can I go to escape your presence? You’re always there, and you reign above it all. Thank you for never leaving or forsaking me! Help me rest in the fullness of your peace today. Help me deal with all my anxieties, fears, and worries in the light of your glory and grace, and to avoid the urge to rule over them in my own strength. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to save me. Your plans are always greater, and I give you praise today!

About this Plan

He Shall Reign

He Shall Reign is a two week Advent study from New Life Church of Arkansas. Throughout this plan, we look at the anticipation of Christ's birth and how He came to establish His kingdom on earth. Our prayer is that this study would remind you of the unshakable reign of our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
