         <div class="label">18</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Duties of Priests and Levites</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="NUM.18.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Aaron, &#8220;You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="NUM.18.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister before the tent of the covenant law. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.18.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">They are to be responsible to you and are to perform all the duties of the tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.18.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting&#8212;all the work at the tent&#8212;and no one else may come near where you are.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.18.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.18.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">&#8220;You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar, so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="NUM.18.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> to do the work at the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.18.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain. I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Offerings for Priests and Levites</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.18.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.18.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Aaron, &#8220;I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion, your perpetual share. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">You are to have the part of the most holy offerings that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain or sin</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:9 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">purification</span></span></span><span class="content"> or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it. You must regard it as holy.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.18.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">&#8220;This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.18.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain they give the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> as the firstfruits of their harvest. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.18.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">All the land&#8217;s firstfruits that they bring to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will be yours. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.18.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.18.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">&#8220;Everything in Israel that is devoted</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:14 </span><span class="ft">The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the <span class="nd">Lord</span>.</span></span></span><span class="content"> to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is yours. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.18.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is yours. But you must redeem every firstborn son and every firstborn male of unclean animals. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.18.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">When they are a month old, you must redeem them at the redemption price set at five shekels</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:16 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 2 ounces or about 58 grams</span></span></span><span class="content"> of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.18.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.18.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy. Splash their blood against the altar and burn their fat as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.18.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh are yours. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.18.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> for both you and your offspring.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.18.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.18.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Aaron, &#8220;You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.18.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.18.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.18.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="NUM.18.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. They will receive no inheritance among the Israelites. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.18.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. That is why I said concerning them: &#8216;They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="NUM.18.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="NUM.18.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses, </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="NUM.18.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">&#8220;Speak to the Levites and say to them: &#8216;When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s offering. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="NUM.18.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Your offering will be reckoned to you as grain from the threshing floor or juice from the winepress. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="NUM.18.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">In this way you also will present an offering to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> from all the tithes you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s portion to Aaron the priest. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.18.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">You must present as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="NUM.18.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="NUM.18.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">&#8220;Say to the Levites: &#8216;When you present the best part, it will be reckoned to you as the product of the threshing floor or the winepress. </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="NUM.18.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere, for it is your wages for your work at the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="NUM.18.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">By presenting the best part of it you will not be guilty in this matter; then you will not defile the holy offerings of the Israelites, and you will not die.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">19</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Water of Cleansing</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="NUM.19.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Moses and Aaron: </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="NUM.19.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is a requirement of the law that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has commanded: Tell the Israelites to bring you a red heifer without defect or blemish and that has never been under a yoke. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="NUM.19.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Give it to Eleazar the priest; it is to be taken outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="NUM.19.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Then Eleazar the priest is to take some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the tent of meeting. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="NUM.19.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">While he watches, the heifer is to be burned&#8212;its hide, flesh, blood and intestines. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="NUM.19.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet wool and throw them onto the burning heifer. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="NUM.19.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">After that, the priest must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water. He may then come into the camp, but he will be ceremonially unclean till evening. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.19.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">The man who burns it must also wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he too will be unclean till evening.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="NUM.19.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="NUM.19.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and put them in a ceremonially clean place outside the camp. They are to be kept by the Israelite community for use in the water of cleansing; it is for purification from sin. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.19.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The man who gathers up the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he too will be unclean till evening. This will be a lasting ordinance both for the Israelites and for the foreigners residing among them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="NUM.19.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="NUM.19.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">&#8220;Whoever touches a human corpse will be unclean for seven days. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="NUM.19.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They must purify themselves with the water on the third day and on the seventh day; then they will be clean. But if they do not purify themselves on the third and seventh days, they will not be clean. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.19.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">If they fail to purify themselves after touching a human corpse, they defile the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s tabernacle. They must be cut off from Israel. Because the water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, they are unclean; their uncleanness remains on them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="NUM.19.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="NUM.19.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is the law that applies when a person dies in a tent: Anyone who enters the tent and anyone who is in it will be unclean for seven days, </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.19.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">and every open container without a lid fastened on it will be unclean.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="NUM.19.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.19.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;Anyone out in the open who touches someone who has been killed with a sword or someone who has died a natural death, or anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="NUM.19.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="NUM.19.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;For the unclean person, put some ashes from the burned purification offering into a jar and pour fresh water over them. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="NUM.19.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water and sprinkle the tent and all the furnishings and the people who were there. He must also sprinkle anyone who has touched a human bone or a grave or anyone who has been killed or anyone who has died a natural death. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="NUM.19.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The man who is clean is to sprinkle those who are unclean on the third and seventh days, and on the seventh day he is to purify them. Those who are being cleansed must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and that evening they will be clean. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="NUM.19.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">But if those who are unclean do not purify themselves, they must be cut off from the community, because they have defiled the sanctuary of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. The water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on them, and they are unclean. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.19.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">This is a lasting ordinance for them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="NUM.19.21"><span class="content">&#8220;The man who sprinkles the water of cleansing must also wash his clothes, and anyone who touches the water of cleansing will be unclean till evening. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="NUM.19.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Anything that an unclean person touches becomes unclean, and anyone who touches it becomes unclean till evening.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jehoshaphat King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.17.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.17.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and put garrisons in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.17.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.17.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him. He did not consult the Baals </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.17.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.17.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.17.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">His heart was devoted to the ways of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.17.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.17.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel and Micaiah to teach in the towns of Judah. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.17.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">With them were certain Levites&#8212;Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah&#8212;and the priests Elishama and Jehoram. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.17.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.17.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.17.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The fear of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.17.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.17.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.17.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.17.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced fighting men in Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.17.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Their enrollment by families was as follows:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.17.14"><span class="content">From Judah, commanders of units of 1,000:</span></span></div><div class="li2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.17.14"><span class="content">Adnah the commander, with 300,000 fighting men;</span></span></div><div class="li2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.17.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.17.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;</span></span></div><div class="li2"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.17.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.17.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">next, Amasiah son of Zikri, who volunteered himself for the service of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, with 200,000.</span></span></div><div class="li1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.17.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.17.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">From Benjamin:</span></span></div><div class="li2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.17.17"><span class="content">Eliada, a valiant soldier, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields;</span></span></div><div class="li2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.17.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.17.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">next, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.17.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.17.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.</span></span></div>
