            <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Joshua&#8217;s Farewell to the Leaders</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JOS.23.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">After a long time had passed and the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JOS.23.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">summoned all Israel&#8212;their elders, leaders, judges and officials&#8212;and said to them: &#8220;I am very old. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JOS.23.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">You yourselves have seen everything the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God who fought for you. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JOS.23.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain&#8212;the nations I conquered&#8212;between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JOS.23.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God himself will push them out for your sake. He will drive them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God promised you.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JOS.23.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JOS.23.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">&#8220;Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JOS.23.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JOS.23.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But you are to hold fast to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God, as you have until now.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JOS.23.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JOS.23.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JOS.23.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">One of you routs a thousand, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God fights for you, just as he promised. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOS.23.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">So be very careful to love the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JOS.23.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JOS.23.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.23.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">then you may be sure that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God has given you.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JOS.23.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JOS.23.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">&#8220;Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JOS.23.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">But just as all the good things the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JOS.23.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">If you violate the covenant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.&#8221;</span></span></div>

And we</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">5:2 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">let us</span></span></span><span class="content"> boast in the hope of the glory of God. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ROM.5.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Not only so, but we</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">5:3 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">let us</span></span></span><span class="content"> also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ROM.5.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">perseverance, character; and character, hope. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ROM.5.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">And hope does not put us to shame, because God&#8217;s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ROM.5.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ROM.5.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ROM.5.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ROM.5.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ROM.5.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ROM.5.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God&#8217;s wrath through him! </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ROM.5.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">For if, while we were God&#8217;s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ROM.5.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ROM.5.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ROM.5.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned&#8212;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ROM.5.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ROM.5.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone&#8217;s account where there is no law. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ROM.5.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ROM.5.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ROM.5.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God&#8217;s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ROM.5.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man&#8217;s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ROM.5.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God&#8217;s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ROM.5.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ROM.5.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ROM.5.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ROM.5.19"></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ROM.5.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.
