 <div class="label">26</div><div class="s1">Isaac and Abimelek</div><div class="p">1Now there was a famine in the land&#8212;besides the previous famine in Abraham&#8217;s time&#8212;and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar. 2The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, &#8220;Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. 3Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. 4I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring#26:4 Or seed all nations on earth will be blessed,#26:4 Or and all nations on earth will use the name of your offspring in blessings (see 48:20) 5because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.&#8221; 6So Isaac stayed in Gerar.</div><div class="p">7When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, &#8220;She is my sister,&#8221; because he was afraid to say, &#8220;She is my wife.&#8221; He thought, &#8220;The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.&#8221;</div><div class="p">8When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, &#8220;She is really your wife! Why did you say, &#8216;She is my sister&#8217;?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Isaac answered him, &#8220;Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.&#8221;</div><div class="p">10Then Abimelek said, &#8220;What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.&#8221;</div><div class="p">11So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: &#8220;Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. 13The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. 14He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him. 15So all the wells that his father&#8217;s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.</div><div class="p">16Then Abimelek said to Isaac, &#8220;Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.&#8221;</div><div class="p">17So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. 18Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.</div><div class="p">19Isaac&#8217;s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, &#8220;The water is ours!&#8221; So he named the well Esek,#26:20 Esek means dispute. because they disputed with him. 21Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.#26:21 Sitnah means opposition. 22He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,#26:22 Rehoboth means room. saying, &#8220;Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.&#8221;</div><div class="p">23From there he went up to Beersheba. 24That night the Lord appeared to him and said, &#8220;I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.&#8221;</div><div class="p">25Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.</div><div class="p">26Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27Isaac asked them, &#8220;Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?&#8221;</div><div class="p">28They answered, &#8220;We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, &#8216;There ought to be a sworn agreement between us&#8217;&#8212;between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p">30Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.</div><div class="p">32That day Isaac&#8217;s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, &#8220;We&#8217;ve found water!&#8221; 33He called it Shibah,#26:33 Shibah can mean oath or seven. and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.#26:33 Beersheba can mean well of the oath and well of seven.</div><div class="s1">Jacob Takes Esau&#8217;s Blessing</div><div class="p">34When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">The Lord Calls Samuel</div><div class="p">1The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.</div><div class="p">2One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4Then the Lord called Samuel.</div><div class="p">Samuel answered, &#8220;Here I am.&#8221; 5And he ran to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am; you called me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">But Eli said, &#8220;I did not call; go back and lie down.&#8221; So he went and lay down.</div><div class="p">6Again the Lord called, &#8220;Samuel!&#8221; And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am; you called me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;My son,&#8221; Eli said, &#8220;I did not call; go back and lie down.&#8221;</div><div class="p">7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.</div><div class="p">8A third time the Lord called, &#8220;Samuel!&#8221; And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am; you called me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9So Eli told Samuel, &#8220;Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, &#8216;Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; So Samuel went and lay down in his place.</div><div class="p">10The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, &#8220;Samuel! Samuel!&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then Samuel said, &#8220;Speak, for your servant is listening.&#8221;</div><div class="p">11And the Lord said to Samuel: &#8220;See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 12At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family&#8212;from beginning to end. 13For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,#3:13 An ancient Hebrew scribal tradition (see also Septuagint); Masoretic Text sons made themselves contemptible and he failed to restrain them. 14Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, &#8216;The guilt of Eli&#8217;s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16but Eli called him and said, &#8220;Samuel, my son.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Samuel answered, &#8220;Here I am.&#8221;</div><div class="p">17&#8220;What was it he said to you?&#8221; Eli asked. &#8220;Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.&#8221; 18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, &#8220;He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.&#8221;</div><div class="p">19The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel&#8217;s words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. 21The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="p">1And Samuel&#8217;s word came to all Israel.</div><div class="s1">The Philistines Capture the Ark</div><div class="p">Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 2The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, &#8220;Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord&#8217;s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli&#8217;s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.</div><div class="p">5When the ark of the Lord&#8217;s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 6Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, &#8220;What&#8217;s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?&#8221;</div><div class="p">When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7the Philistines were afraid. &#8220;A god has#4:7 Or &#8220;Gods have (see Septuagint) come into the camp,&#8221; they said. &#8220;Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8We&#8217;re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!&#8221;</div><div class="p">10So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11The ark of God was captured, and Eli&#8217;s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.</div><div class="s1">Death of Eli</div><div class="p">12That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 13When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.</div><div class="p">14Eli heard the outcry and asked, &#8220;What is the meaning of this uproar?&#8221;</div><div class="p">The man hurried over to Eli, 15who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 16He told Eli, &#8220;I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Eli asked, &#8220;What happened, my son?&#8221;</div><div class="p">17The man who brought the news replied, &#8220;Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.&#8221;</div><div class="p">18When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led#4:18 Traditionally judged Israel forty years.</div><div class="p">19His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20As she was dying, the women attending her said, &#8220;Don&#8217;t despair; you have given birth to a son.&#8221; But she did not respond or pay any attention.</div><div class="p">21She named the boy Ichabod,#4:21 Ichabod means no glory. saying, &#8220;The Glory has departed from Israel&#8221;&#8212;because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22She said, &#8220;The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">25</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Ten Virgins</div><div class="p">1 &#8220;At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.</div><div class="p">6 &#8220;At midnight the cry rang out: &#8216;Here&#8217;s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!&#8217;</div><div class="p">7 &#8220;Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish ones said to the wise, &#8216;Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.&#8217;</div><div class="p">9 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;No,&#8217; they replied, &#8216;there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.&#8217;</div><div class="p">10 &#8220;But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.</div><div class="p">11 &#8220;Later the others also came. &#8216;Lord, Lord,&#8217; they said, &#8216;open the door for us!&#8217;</div><div class="p">12 &#8220;But he replied, &#8216;Truly I tell you, I don&#8217;t know you.&#8217;</div><div class="p">13 &#8220;Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Bags of Gold</div><div class="p">14 &#8220;Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,#25:15 Greek five talents&#8230; two talents&#8230; one talent; also throughout this parable; a talent was worth about 20 years of a day laborer&#8217;s wage. each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master&#8217;s money.</div><div class="p">19 &#8220;After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. &#8216;Master,&#8217; he said, &#8216;you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.&#8217;</div><div class="p">21 &#8220;His master replied, &#8216;Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master&#8217;s happiness!&#8217;</div><div class="p">22 &#8220;The man with two bags of gold also came. &#8216;Master,&#8217; he said, &#8216;you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.&#8217;</div><div class="p">23 &#8220;His master replied, &#8216;Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master&#8217;s happiness!&#8217;</div><div class="p">24 &#8220;Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. &#8216;Master,&#8217; he said, &#8216;I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.&#8217;</div><div class="p">26 &#8220;His master replied, &#8216;You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.</div><div class="p">28 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.&#8217;</div><div class="s1">The Sheep and the Goats</div><div class="p">31 &#8220;When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.</div><div class="p">34 &#8220;Then the King will say to those on his right, &#8216;Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.&#8217;</div><div class="p">37 &#8220;Then the righteous will answer him, &#8216;Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?&#8217;</div><div class="p">40 &#8220;The King will reply, &#8216;Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.&#8217;</div><div class="p">41 &#8220;Then he will say to those on his left, &#8216;Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.&#8217;</div><div class="p">44 &#8220;They also will answer, &#8216;Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?&#8217;</div><div class="p">45 &#8220;He will reply, &#8216;Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.&#8217;</div><div class="p">46 &#8220;Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.&#8221;</div>
