Bible in a Year

DAY 349 OF 365

We’ve all heard about the guy who got swallowed by a big fish, but what else is the book of Jonah about?

-Jonah was a contemporary of Amos.

-Jonah is the only prophet in the books of prophecy whose’ ministry is to a foreign, Gentile nation instead of to Israel.

-Jesus not only references, but identifies personally with Jonah in Matthew 12.

-One of the big ideas of the book of Jonah is God’s reserved right to offer mercy to whom he desires to show mercy. This character is further revealed under the New Covenant centuries later, as the Gospel is offered both to the Jew and the Gentile.
