         <div class="label">39</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Joseph and Potiphar&#8217;s Wife</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.39.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh&#8217;s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.39.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.39.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.39.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">When his master saw that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was with him and that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gave him success in everything he did, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.39.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.39.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.39.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph&#8217;s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.39.6"><span class="content">Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.39.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">and after a while his master&#8217;s wife took notice of Joseph and said, &#8220;Come to bed with me!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.39.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.39.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But he refused. &#8220;With me in charge,&#8221; he told her, &#8220;my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.39.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.39.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.39.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.39.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.39.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">She caught him by his cloak and said, &#8220;Come to bed with me!&#8221; But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.39.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.39.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.39.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">she called her household servants. &#8220;Look,&#8221; she said to them, &#8220;this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.39.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.39.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.39.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.39.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Then she told him this story: &#8220;That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.39.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.39.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.39.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, &#8220;This is how your slave treated me,&#8221; he burned with anger. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.39.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Joseph&#8217;s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king&#8217;s prisoners were confined.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.39.20"><span class="content">But while Joseph was there in the prison, </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.39.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.39.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.39.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph&#8217;s care, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">29</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Achish Sends David Back to Ziklag</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="1SA.29.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The Philistines gathered all their forces at Aphek, and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1SA.29.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">As the Philistine rulers marched with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men were marching at the rear with Achish. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.29.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The commanders of the Philistines asked, &#8220;What about these Hebrews?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.29.3"><span class="content">Achish replied, &#8220;Is this not David, who was an officer of Saul king of Israel? He has already been with me for over a year, and from the day he left Saul until now, I have found no fault in him.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.29.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="1SA.29.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, &#8220;Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master&#8217;s favor than by taking the heads of our own men? </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.29.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Isn&#8217;t this the David they sang about in their dances:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.29.5"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Saul has slain his thousands,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.29.5"><span class="content">and David his tens of thousands&#8217;?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.29.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1SA.29.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">So Achish called David and said to him, &#8220;As surely as the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day you came to me until today, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers don&#8217;t approve of you. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1SA.29.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Now turn back and go in peace; do nothing to displease the Philistine rulers.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1SA.29.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.29.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">&#8220;But what have I done?&#8221; asked David. &#8220;What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can&#8217;t I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.29.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1SA.29.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Achish answered, &#8220;I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders have said, &#8216;He must not go up with us into battle.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.29.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Now get up early, along with your master&#8217;s servants who have come with you, and leave in the morning as soon as it is light.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.29.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1SA.29.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">So David and his men got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">30</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">David Destroys the Amalekites</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="1SA.30.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1SA.30.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1SA.30.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.30.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="1SA.30.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.30.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">David&#8217;s two wives had been captured&#8212;Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1SA.30.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1SA.30.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1SA.30.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, &#8220;Bring me the ephod.&#8221; Abiathar brought it to him, </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.30.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">and David inquired of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, &#8220;Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.30.8"><span class="content">&#8220;Pursue them,&#8221; he answered. &#8220;You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.30.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1SA.30.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.30.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.30.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1SA.30.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1SA.30.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1SA.30.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1SA.30.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">David asked him, &#8220;Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1SA.30.13"><span class="content">He said, &#8220;I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1SA.30.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1SA.30.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1SA.30.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">David asked him, &#8220;Can you lead me down to this raiding party?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1SA.30.15"><span class="content">He answered, &#8220;Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1SA.30.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1SA.30.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="1SA.30.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="1SA.30.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="1SA.30.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="1SA.30.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, &#8220;This is David&#8217;s plunder.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="1SA.30.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="1SA.30.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="1SA.30.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">But all the evil men and troublemakers among David&#8217;s followers said, &#8220;Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="1SA.30.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="1SA.30.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">David replied, &#8220;No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="1SA.30.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="1SA.30.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="1SA.30.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="1SA.30.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, &#8220;Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s enemies.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="1SA.30.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="1SA.30.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">David sent it to those who were in Bethel, Ramoth Negev and Jattir; </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="1SA.30.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="1SA.30.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">and Rakal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites and the Kenites; </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="1SA.30.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">to those in Hormah, Bor Ashan, Athak </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="1SA.30.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">and Hebron; and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.</span></span></div>
