 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">The Plague of Locusts</div><div class="p"> 1Then the Lord said to Moses, &#8220;Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them 2that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, &#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: &#8216;How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. 5They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. 6They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians&#8212;something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.</div><div class="p"> 7Pharaoh&#8217;s officials said to him, &#8220;How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. &#8220;Go, worship the Lord your God,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But tell me who will be going.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Moses answered, &#8220;We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Pharaoh said, &#8220;The Lord be with you&#8212;if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.#10:10 Or Be careful, trouble is in store for you! 11No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that&#8217;s what you have been asking for.&#8221; Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh&#8217;s presence.</div><div class="p"> 12And the Lord said to Moses, &#8220;Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; 14they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 15They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail&#8212;everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.</div><div class="p"> 16Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, &#8220;I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.#10:19 Or the Sea of Reeds Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20But the Lord hardened Pharaoh&#8217;s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.</div><div class="s1">The Plague of Darkness</div><div class="p"> 21Then the Lord said to Moses, &#8220;Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt&#8212;darkness that can be felt.&#8221; 22So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.</div><div class="p"> 24Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, &#8220;Go, worship the Lord. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25But Moses said, &#8220;You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God. 26Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 27But the Lord hardened Pharaoh&#8217;s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28Pharaoh said to Moses, &#8220;Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;Just as you say,&#8221; Moses replied. &#8220;I will never appear before you again.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Last Words</div><div class="p"> 1These are the last words of David:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,</div><div class="q2">the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,</div><div class="q1">the man anointed by the God of Jacob,</div><div class="q2">the hero of Israel&#8217;s songs:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 2&#8220;The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me;</div><div class="q2">his word was on my tongue.</div><div class="q1"> 3The God of Israel spoke,</div><div class="q2">the Rock of Israel said to me:</div><div class="q1">&#8216;When one rules over people in righteousness,</div><div class="q2">when he rules in the fear of God,</div><div class="q1"> 4he is like the light of morning at sunrise</div><div class="q2">on a cloudless morning,</div><div class="q1">like the brightness after rain</div><div class="q2">that brings grass from the earth.&#8217;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 5&#8220;If my house were not right with God,</div><div class="q2">surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,</div><div class="q2">arranged and secured in every part;</div><div class="q1">surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation</div><div class="q2">and grant me my every desire.</div><div class="q1"> 6But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,</div><div class="q2">which are not gathered with the hand.</div><div class="q1"> 7Whoever touches thorns</div><div class="q2">uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;</div><div class="q2">they are burned up where they lie.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Mighty Warriors</div><div class="p"> 8These are the names of David&#8217;s mighty warriors:</div><div class="p">Josheb-Basshebeth,#23:8 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts suggest Ish-Bosheth, that is, Esh-Baal (see also 1 Chron. 11:11 Jashobeam). a Tahkemonite,#23:8 Probably a variant of Hakmonite (see 1 Chron. 11:11) was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed#23:8 Some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 1 Chron. 11:11); Hebrew and other Septuagint manuscripts Three; it was Adino the Eznite who killed eight hundred men in one encounter.</div><div class="p"> 9Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim#23:9 See 1 Chron. 11:13; Hebrew gathered there. for battle. Then the Israelites retreated, 10but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.</div><div class="p"> 11Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel&#8217;s troops fled from them. 12But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.</div><div class="p"> 13During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15David longed for water and said, &#8220;Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!&#8221; 16So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. 17&#8220;Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!&#8221; he said. &#8220;Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?&#8221; And David would not drink it.</div><div class="p">Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.</div><div class="p"> 18Abishai the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three.#23:18 Most Hebrew manuscripts (see also 1 Chron. 11:20); two Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac Thirty He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.</div><div class="p"> 20Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab&#8217;s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian&#8217;s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 23He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three.  <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls His First Disciples</div><div class="p"> 1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,#5:1 That is, the Sea of Galilee the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2He saw at the water&#8217;s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.</div><div class="p"> 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, &#8220;Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5Simon answered, &#8220;Master, we&#8217;ve worked hard all night and haven&#8217;t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.</div><div class="p"> 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus&#8217; knees and said, &#8220;Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!&#8221; 9For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon&#8217;s partners.</div><div class="p">Then Jesus said to Simon, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.&#8221; 11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy</div><div class="p"> 12While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.#5:12 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, &#8220;Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. &#8220;I am willing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Be clean!&#8221; And immediately the leprosy left him.</div><div class="p"> 14Then Jesus ordered him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man</div><div class="p"> 17One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. 18Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 20When Jesus saw their faith, he said, &#8220;Friend, your sins are forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, &#8220;Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, &#8220;Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23Which is easier: to say, &#8216;Your sins are forgiven,&#8217; or to say, &#8216;Get up and walk&#8217;? 24But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.&#8221; So he said to the paralyzed man, &#8220;I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.&#8221; 25Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, &#8220;We have seen remarkable things today.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners</div><div class="p"> 27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. &#8220;Follow me,&#8221; Jesus said to him, 28and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.</div><div class="p"> 29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, &#8220;Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31Jesus answered them, &#8220;It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Questioned About Fasting</div><div class="p"> 33They said to him, &#8220;John&#8217;s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34Jesus answered, &#8220;Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36He told them this parable: &#8220;No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, &#8216;The old is better.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>
