Personality Clashes
People are unique individuals with distinct personalities. Occasionally you may meet someone who is difficult to get along with, and you soon realize that your personalities don’t automatically jive. It may take some work to develop and maintain such a relationship. You may find that to be true in your marriage. Initially, you were attracted to your mate perhaps because of his or her good looks. Maybe you discovered a talent or trait that was especially endearing. You learned you had common interests and shared similar values.
Even after all you knew, you undoubtedly discovered some new things after marriage—habits, personality quirks, and different ways of seeing things that cause occasional disagreements. What happened to the peace and joy you once experienced, and, more importantly, what is to be done? According to Scripture, look within. Ask God to reveal to you the ways you are contributing to the discord, and open your eyes to your own difficult personality traits. Such a prayer will open the door for God to begin a transformation in your heart that will affect you both.
What are some of the personality differences between you and your mate? Ask God to reveal where each of you needs to change, and to grant the grace to accept one another.
