DAY 25 OF 28

Refuge

No harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. -Psalm 91:10

For years I’ve heard people pray, thanking God for protection from “dangers seen and unseen.” The intricacy of God’s protection became clearer to me as I listened to Mrs. Amelia Boynton Robinson share her experience in Selma, Ala., on March 7, 1965, on what became known as Bloody Sunday.

She was one of 600 marchers walking from Selma to the Alabama capitol in Montgomery, to uplift African Americans’ right to vote. They had to cross the Edmund Pettis Bridge.

The day was cloudy, so her friend made sure Amelia wore a rain cap. After praying at Brown Chapel AME Church, the marchers moved out together. But state troopers on horseback met them before they could complete their route and began to attack, armed with cattle prods, clubs, and tear gas.

A trooper knocked Amelia unconscious as troopers sprayed tear gas that overwhelmed the marchers and covered her body. Amelia’s rain cap slid over her face, partially protecting her from the toxic fumes. Though her throat was damaged, she lived to tell the story. God used a rain cap to make all the difference.

Amelia Boynton Robinson lived forty years after the dangers of Bloody Sunday, abiding in the shelter of the Lord. Those who declare to the Lord: “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:2) will find the deliverance they seek.

God is intimately interested in our protection because God accomplishes His purposes through God’s people.

Yulise Waters

How does the Lord’s protection give you the strength to keep moving forward?

Lord, thank You for protecting me from dangers seen and unseen and sprinkling me with drops of Your protection each day.
